Is anything "private" on Facebook?
« on: January 04, 2014, 03:04:09 PM »
As most TS visitors know, there is a "Messages" link on all the pages. It is actually referred to as a "PM" service. The "PM" standing for "Private* Messaging." What this really means is that you designate who you want to send a message to and they are the only one who views it, thus, it is 'private' rather than something posted in a thread. And while it's never been used, as far as I know, the Admins and Moderators can access these messages stored in the archives of the board. That is not unusual considering that someone may send a message that may need the 'attention' of those trusted to maintain 'law and order' here. wink.gif But, as I said, I'm not aware that it has ever been done. First, because TS is such a friendly place, IMHO. And second, because your Admins and Moderators have plenty of other work to do. I'd hazard a guess that most of them (me included) don't even know how or where to look for those messages, much less have any desire to read them!

These honorable intentions, of course, have nothing to do with Facebook and its ilk. They make money by having users give them information. A FB user/poster is the product of FB. A FB user/poster is NOT a customer. Therefore, FB tends to search, gather, aggregate and sell anything and everything it can from all FB users. And, it turns out, even from what it calls "Private Messages." And they've found a new way to use that info and snoop even a link you may include in anything you post, including "private" messages. rolleyes.gif wallbash.gif There are still many who think there is a "free" lunch. Users are not only giving away what FB sells, you are paying to do it by losing ever more privacy. inspect.gif stop.gif

*The 'P' in "PM" actually stands for Personal, not Private. Really a big difference! yes.gif

THERE ARE TWO TYPES OF COUNTRIES
Those that use metric = #1 Measurement system

Ah! Another reason why I don't subscribe to Facebook. Now if I could only unsubscribe from NSA... Thinking.gif

It's easy for me to not RE-subscribe (I once did, but who knows if my info/data was really deleted?) because I don't have any friends or family who will talk to me. tease.gif

But there are some people who actually do have friends and family who don't know any other way to mass communicate. So, what do they do? Perhaps the same thing most of us old codgers did when we grew up as the Internet did: reveal as little as possible about yourself, create an anonymous persona, use strong passwords and never use them twice, learn what "https" means, etc. Basically, take responsibility for what you do and say on the interweb, to be coarse about it; it's simply the biggest, dirtiest bathroom wall ever created and there are free markers hanging around for anyone to use on that wall!! wallbash.gif

That is exactly what I was wondering, these people who use FB constantly dont use email much, from what I see from my relatives kids and grandkids.
The kids all use FB, and when I ask them to email me a picture, they say, "OH I will just stick it up on my FB page for you".
I guess its easier and quicker.
I have to use FB because of all the youngsters in the family, and friends who prefer FB to other ways to communicate, but I dont put much up on my own FB page, nor do I use the private message system there.
My grandsons all use email but they are much more sophisticated with the computers than any of the young gals.
Im glad you brought this up, as I saw that on the news yesterday.
