Coast Guard rescues local fisherman

May 25, 2014: The 28ft vessel "Rip Rider" reported it was taking on water fast and sinking 15nm offshore of Newport, Oregon. Coast Guard responded with CG47266 and an HH-65 helicopter from Newport's AIRFAC to aid the vessel and rescue the crewman. The boat owner did everything right: put on his survival equipment, turned on his emergency radio beacon, and sent out a mayday. Video is just a short clip of the rescue from the sea.

I've read so many books on Coast Guard rescues (most written by Michael Tougias), and have a glimmer of how quickly things can turn, so it's nice to read about a rescue that went by the book. Very cool video and everyone around here is most proud of our local "Coasties".

Part of a large group of 'servants' we too often take for granted until we need them; Firemen, Police, our Military. Sure, they get 'paid' but rarely equal to what we'd want for the same job or for the risks they are expected to take.
