Wireless network headache(s)
« on: August 21, 2014, 10:57:23 PM »
In anticipation of abandoning  the Verizon Share Everything concept.

Signed up with TWC for cable internet, and it cranked up without a hitch. Proceeded to the wireless portion using an old D-link (g only) router that I had from a past life, which seemed fast enuff for what we do here.

1st issue was:  Couldn't see it on the upper portion of the house where most of the "wireless" action  takes place. No problem, a quick trip to  Best Buy and purchase a NetGear WN3000 network extender. Worked great in the unencrypted mode. Spent hours in the manual and on the keyboard re-learning how to set it up and low and behold  the old D-link jobber only supports WEP etc encryption. Wont work with the extender. (WPS required)

Another trip up the road and purchase a Belkin 600. Put the install CD in the MBP and in about 5 minutes  everything came up like magic and can see it all over the house. EXCEPT my new (refurb) iPad mini wont hook up. Both MBP's, the iPhone, and her iPad work (have not tackled   the Canon printer yet).

Viewing  the Belkin screen that shows what is connected is a device named "daryl's iPad".  Now I THINK this must go back to the original iPad1 that got left on an airplane, and I probably named this one the same thing.  The screen also shows an iMac which died years ago and a Powerbook that has not been turned on for over a year. All of these devises are showing IP addresses.

It looks to me like I have to get them off of the "network" somehow. Can someone point me in the direction I need to go?????  It has been a very long day. Sack time, tomorrow is another day.

Nice shower and a toddy must be good for the soul, and bless google.  Changed the name of the new mini It was the same as the lost one.  Will smoke test it tomorrow.

Most list "thingies" (sorry about the use of technical terms) have a "+" and "-" buttons at the bottom of the list. They usually allow you to add and delete/subtract items in the list.

Or you might try selecting a device you don't want/need and pressing the delete key.

I looked at Network Diagnostics.app [/System/Library/CoreServices/Network Diagnostics.app](which is what you get when you use the "Advanced" button in Networks Pref Panel) but that's not any help.

Normally, one would simply tell the iPad/iPhone/etc. to "forget" any particular Network. Obviously, that will be difficult if you no longer have the iDevice/computer... so...

I think your best bet is to do some kind of 'total memory purge' on the D-link. Strange as it seems, it must have memorized all the devices you ever connected with it. It's hard to believe its in any RAM but I suppose it could actually have an EPROM. More likely, it has a plist file that has continued to be copied with every OS update you've made. If that's where these items are stored, you should be able to see a plist file labeled something like: com.dlink... or com.D-link. You might need to also look in the /Library/Preferences directory.

Once found, just turn off the network (the D-link, anyway), move the plist file to the Desktop, and then trun the network devices (Cable Modem, D-link, extender) back on. Hopefully, that will force the D-link to recreate the plist file with fewer/no networked devices.

If all the above fails, take another cold shower and take your wife to lunch/dinner. scram.gif

We used to call deleting a connection and remaking it with the same name "blessing" because somehow it worked in a lot of situations.  We still do something like this in a networked printing environment that I deal with a lot; don't know why!   Thinking.gif

I Finally got it up and running on almost all cylinders.  thumbup.gif   I won't bore any one with all the details, start, reboot, uninstall, reboot, etc etc until I finally thru in the sponge and initiated a "Chat" with Belkin. In about 4 sentences, the lady nailed it. This Belkin router, on install provides a 2nd wireless option, I think she said 54GB. which the mini homed in on. Once the mini was told to "fugitabboutit" it popped right onto the wireless network.  yahoo.gif

I did change the names on both MBP's and the Mini, HOWEVER looking  on the Belkin "connected devices" site  it still shows names from the olden days. PB1, PB2, Daryl's iPad, and iMAC sharing. Since everything is working I do not think I will even attempt to chase that down. wacko.gif

In that case, I recommend an appropriately sized and place piece of Duct Tape. thumbup.gif
