Itunes frustration
« on: August 30, 2014, 01:02:03 AM »
I bought some music online, but they could not send it to me in digital format - they sent me the cds. I do not have a CD player, so I used my wife's macbook pro to record it, and transferred music across, but it now does not configure in my iTunes library.

There are ways round this I guess - what would you suggest?

Perhaps using a different player than iTunes?

First, change your Finder settings to allow you to see file name suffixes. You'll be amazed at what you are not seeing. Finder->Prefs->Advanced->check the "Show all filename extensions" choice. It can often be helpful to know this information when trouble-shooting. You can change the setting back later, of course. wink.gif

Second, tell us exactly how you "recorded" the CD on your wife's Mac.

Third, tell us what the suffix is on the 'music' you transferred to your Mac.

Let me explain I have iTunes Match - I made the music into a playlist and it works on my mac. The ending having performed your first direction - is .aiff -it states unknown album. So is it that I just have to change the ending to .m4a ?

I recorded the music just through her CD drive........and then transferred by email to my mac.

You can change the 'text' shown in the suffix, however, especially in this case, that probably won't help. "aif/.aiff" and ".m4a" are two different formats. There is info in the file besides the audio and simply changing the suffix won't affect what needs to be changed. So...

Look at iTunes->Prefs->General->Import Settings...

I suspect you have "AAC Encoder" showing in the "Import Using" pop up list. Change that to "AIFF Encoder" and reimport the files (might as well delete the old import, if they still exist). Does that make a difference? I don't use iTunes much anymore, but I used to burn a couple of CDs every week from .aif recordings. Nor do I have any experience with iTunes Match/Plus/etc. My usage is mainly syncing iDevices and burning those CDs (in the past).

I have now changed to AIFF Encoder. My wife has the other Mac at her work - so cannot import till another day - possibly after Monday - so will follow up in the week - thank you.

My wife is ditching the mac book pro and I finally have decided to buy a separate disk drive (though not an apple one)
