Is it possible to downgrade iTunes?
« on: October 16, 2014, 11:18:27 PM »
Okay. I'm frustrated beyond belief and I have enough to deal with, so I've given in and reinstalled iTunes 12 with it's ugly interface, it's ugly icon, it's sad mini-player window. Thanks for the help. I'm off to sleep.

Oops. I accidentally installed iTunes 12 and would like to go back to iTunes 11. I have backup in both TM and SuperDuper. Is it possible to go backwards (and keep my music library), and what's the best way to do this? Also, do I have to reinstall my music libraries? I'm guessing yes.

BTW, who in the world thought a bright red icon is pretty for a music program? Especially after all these years of lovely blue, when the icon was identifiable? Personally, I think they need to be demoted back to the sandbox with a box of BLUE crayons. wink.gif

With a complete backup, it should work ok. Otherwise, you cannot use the newer library with the older iTunes - you do need to reinstall your backed up libraries.

Other than the icon color, what's the issue?

What is "iTunes"? dntknw.gif

I'd suggest NOT doing anything with the new app that might write anything to the current Libraries.

If you have backups of both the Libraries and the app, move the current stuff somewhere (Desktop) and archive/compress them. Then trash the real items. That should prevent anything trying to open the new app plus prevent the current Libraries from being used, in case they have already been converted to what V. 12 wants.

Now you can use Time Machine to find the old version and Restore it. Lastly, find the Libraries via TM and Restore those. Both items should end up exactly where the old ones were.

Alternately, leave things where they are and then do the TM Restore. You'll be asked to "Keep both", "Replace" or something else, I can't remember (maybe install someplace different?). Perhaps you'll be asked to report to Apple why you don't like red, also! eek2.gif

I'd also like to know what your other disappointments are with the new version. I don't use it for much, anymore, besides contacting the Mother Ship for iDevice Backups. dntknw.gif

Perhaps this will make you feel better? At least you'll know you have company...

Okay, so I finally figured out how to uninstall (see below*) and reinstall from a backup. Now I get this error:

A required iTunes component is not installed. Please reinstall iTunes. (-42401)

Every thread I follow about this deal with win machines, not Macs. The few threads with same alert, but different alert number, on Macs have no answers—at least that I've found. Any ideas?

What don't I like about iTunes 12 besides the red icon? I don't like the extra little window that got for the player. I very much like the way it works in 11 (and earlier). In my short time trying to use it, I couldn't find my podcasts. I'm sure they're there, but I didn't have time or patience to search for them. I hated the "look", couldn't find the sidebar, it messed up my playlists and trying to fix those would require much more time than I'm willing to spend. At this rate, I'll switch to my Amazon player. It's but-t ugly, but works easier.

*How to uninstall: log in as admin, get info on application, unlock it, under sharing and permissions set every person to "Read/Write". Then you drag application to trash.

Can't say that I like the new version. Had no emotional attachment to any of the previous ones, either. tongue.gif But I can tell you how I (finally) found the Side Bar: In the 'toolbar' (which is no longer actually editable/modifiable, at least via the "View->Customize Toolbar..." menu in most Apple Apps), on the extreme left side are three icons. One for music, movies, TV shows, and one for "...". Click the music 'note' and you should see all your music. WOW.gif But that still doesn't get the Side Bar (Playlists), of course. flail.gif Well, it might, it depends on what you have selected in the Tool Bar on the extreme right side. That is not an icon but a text label. If it says "Songs" you get to see a list of songs. It can also say, "Albums, Artists, Composers and Genres". But no matter what it says, you should still have your playlist(s). Of course, your milage may vary...

An alternate method is to click on the "Playlists" label bear the center of the window. If you click "My Music" (or anything else in that list!) you'll lose the Side Bar. I don't know why; it's just the way things are! rant.gif

As for your Podcasts, they are plainly available if you click on the obvious 'label' called "..." Where else would you think it was/is?! dntknw.gif Any Mac user should know that "..." means "other stuff we didn't want to list". wallbash.gif For you boobies, simply hover your cursor (not your mouse!) over the labels and Apple will kindly display some descriptive text... assuming you don't 'giggle' the cursor too much...

BTW, if you want to sync/update/backup/etc. with your iDevices, you need to click the never before seen icon representing those things. It looks like a rectangle sitting on one of it's short sides and there is a small break in the line drawing that short/bottom side. I think that indicates where the power/charging cable plugs in. inspect.gif That newly discovered icon sits just to the right of those music, movie, TV shows, and "..." icons. There is also a very thin, gray vertical line separating the rectangle/iDevice thingy. Apparently there is a law in California prohibiting joining those things! dntknw.gif Anyway, clicking that rectangle will show you a list of any recognized iDevices. Unfortunately, this version of iTunes did not fix the loss of contact with iPhones sitting in the same proximity of the Mac (and the WiFi router). I can see that my iPad, sitting in the adjoining room is recognized but the only way to 'see' the (newer) iPhone is to use a USB cable. It's a known problem and Apple's "fix" is to print a page telling you devices must be connected via cables. DOH!

I would be hard pressed to tell you what the old one looks like, so I have no opinion on whether the 'new' one is better or worse. I did manage to open it simply by clicking everything on the window just to see what happened. Luckily, nothing was booby trapped and the app never exploded! eek2.gif

Hope you get your old install working. I doubt I ever open iTunes again unless I want to back up my iDevices to the Mac.

But I really like the new bright red app icon... scram.gif

Kimmer, I just installed it to see what the fuss was about. After some noodling about, I found the way to customize the tool bar at the top which then gives you access to all your file types, like Podcasts and audiobooks etc. By default, it only shows music, movies, and TV shows - but if you click on the three little dots AFTER those icons, you get a drop down list of other file types which you can then add to the toolbar by clicking on "edit" at the bottom of the dropdown. Once you do that, navigation is pretty easy. My playlists are all there too. Yes, it looks a bit different, but I don't think the functionality has changed all that much. That mini player window only shows if you want it to.

Paddy, thanks!

I used to use the mini-player window all the time. Now it's too big to really be a mini window.
Okay, I was inspired by some comments on the TidBITS list, I started clicking around and hovering my mouse over things and I found this itsy-bitsy box (probably easily seen by those with younger eyes) and clicked on it and POOF, away went the big mini window and now I have my old mini player back. smile.gif

I like the new Red icon. Now I can distinguish it from the App Store icon.

All my stuff is in iTunes 12 as before but I have a whole lot more Podcasts than I did before but they are all in the Cloud so, I guess it's alright.
