Failure of CD and of ZIP disk to mount
« on: July 14, 2003, 02:17:30 PM »
WIth my PowerBook 1400cs, OS 8.6, 48 MB RAM, Ramdoubler installed, I have the following problem with either by CD-ROM drive (MGI Model MCTR24EX) or with ZIP 100 drive attached with SSCI port.

When I turn on CD-R Drive or the ZIP Drive and then boot up the PowerBook, neither I am unable to mount CDs in the the CD-R Drive nor ZIP disks in the ZIP Drive.
The only work around is to boot from a bootable CD disk in the drive (or with a bootable Zip disk in the ZIP drive). Then I can restart the PowerBook as the startup drive and mount CDs in the CD-R drive or ZIP disks in the ZIP drive. I always have to go through the process of booting  the CR-Drive (or the ZIP drive) and rebooting the Powerbook before I can use the CR Drive orZip drive.

I've reinstalled the Apple CD/DVD Driver without any effect on behavior of CD drive of Zip drive.

Both the CD Drive and the Zip drive work normally with by PowerMac 7200.

Any suggestions as to problem with PowerBook 1400?

You do not need to boot from a volume in the CD or Zip drive; you just need to boot with a disk in the drive.

To avoid this problem with your Zip drive, you must go to Iomega's Web site and download the IomegaWare driver, which you must then install on your computer.

To avoid this problem with the CD drive, you must use a driver that works with the CD drive. Was the CD-ROM drive made by Apple? If it was not manufactured by Apple, you must use a program like FWB CD-ROM Toolkit to make disks mount; the Apple CD-ROM or CD/DVD driver will not work.

Both the CD and the Zip disk mount without difficulty on my PowerMac 7200. THe CD also mounts without difficulty on my G4 iMac on which it was burned.

I have Iomega Driveron my PowerBook. The CD Drive is not an Apple product and did not come with any of its own drivers.

I have tried booting with CD and with ZIP in their respective drives, but they fail to mount unless I go throughthe ritual first of booting with a CD or with a bootable Zip disk.

Have you already Reset the Power Manager?

I have performed clean install of OS 8.6; re-copied Iomega andCD drivers from my 7200; and reset the power manager - all to no avail.

The machine was purchased used and has always had a problem that dealer was unable to remedy: the battery fails to charge properly or to hold a charge so that I cannot use powerbook on battery. Don't know how this could cause problem with CD and ZP drives.

I have Iomega Driver on my PowerBook. The CD Drive is not an Apple product and did not come with any of its own drivers.

What version of the Iomega driver do you have?

If the CD is not an Apple product and does not have drivers, that's your problem. It'll never mount correctly until you get some drivers for it.

FWB CD-ROM Toolkit is a non-Apple CD-ROM driver that supports most brands of CD-ROM drives.

A search turned up:

MacAlly Cyberdrive SCSI 24X External CDROM w/FWB software for MAC MCTR24EX

http://www.ordersite.com/canadaram/usbaccessories.html

Other examples have this CD-ROM sold with the Software.

Do you have it already?

I will add the FWB driver and see if that solves the problem. As I don't have the Zip Drive with me on this vacation, I don't know the version of Iomega driver. But even with Iomega driver, Zip disks do not mount without going thorugh the step of booting from a Zip drive.

Ron, re: your battery problem - it's probably dying. Nothing to do with the 1400 itself - if you spend some $125 or so, you can get a new battery. Or, you can do as many 1400 owners do - just continue to plug it in to the wall outlet and pretend it never was completely portable! My Mom's 1400 holds a charge for about 10 minutes if you're lucky. eBay is rife with auctions for 1400's with batteries that only hold a charge for 10-15 minutes, because, after all, who in their right mind is going to spend almost as much as the computer is worth on a battery.  tongue.gif  wacko.gif
