I have a USB 3 card reader made by
transcend
. I downloaded a firmware app for it but it is not signed by Apple. I opened it and started to install it via a .pkg file, but it requires a restart. Not knowing anything about this company, I cancelled the installation.
Is this a reliable company? Any comments? I used the card reader to import photos from a CF card and it worked very well. I don't know if a firmware update is required so I'm asking about the safety of its software.

Don't blame you. It's probably only required for Windows, which you'd probably find out during the "install", or after finding just an executable that won't run on OS X. Keyword being "probably".
I've
heard
of Trandscend, not a huge tech hardware giant. I don't think I've ever bought any of their products. Always thought of them as a re-brander rather than an OEM, but have no supporting evidence. There may be some info on <
their USB card reader Support website
>, but I assume you've already been there. They do have memory cards at OWC.

I should have given a link to the specific card reader.
This is it.
It is for Mac.

I assume "TS-RDF8W" and "TS-RDF8K" refer to either the white or the black reader.
I further asssume you downloaded the Mac version vice the Windows?
I
think
you're
safe to try an install. OTOH, what is the 'update' supposed to ... 'update' or 'fix'?
"If it ain't broke..."
Of course, you're the one who installed 11.6 already...

In the days before I had a couple of laptops that had SD slots in them I used what I think is older Transcend SD adapter and it came with no drivers for the MAC but it just worked when
I plugged it into a MAC; the Windows driver "was" necessary to get it to be recognized by Windows XP!

I have used Transcend SD cards for my cameras for many years. Love them. They also carry a lifetime warranty.
I think them to be a very reliable company.
The firmware may not even be needed. Does the card reader work ok? If it works fine, I wouldn't even bother with the firmware updete.

My thought exactly. I asked Transcend tech support that question and I'll post back when I get a response.

Transcend's response:
"If the reader is working perfectly with your computer and CF card then a firmware update is not required."
