Need help with Stuffit Deluxe
« on: July 19, 2003, 08:39:51 PM »
I just starting working with Jaguar, amd updated to Stuffit Deluxe 7.03.  I started up a program in classic and got the message "The application Stuffit Helper could not be launched because of a shared library error......".  Above it was another small window which said the application could not be opened - error 9.  What does this mean, what do I do about it, and do I care?  :(

Well I'm confused. huh.gif

"Q: What is the StuffIt Helper?

A: The StuffIt helper only runs on a Classic OS. It is necessary (in combination with the True Finder Integration control panel) to provide you with these features:

 Magic Menu
 Archive Via Rename
StuffIt Browser (if you previously had StuffIt Deluxe 6.x installed).
When installing StuffIt Deluxe 7.x, an alias for the StuffIt Helper is placed inside your System Folder's Startup Items folder. If you do not want the features listed above, you can remove this alias from the Startup Items folder to prevent the StuffIt Helper from loading when you restart in the future. If you choose to do this, you should also disable the True Finder Integration control panel."

Yes, I read all that - but when I bring up Classic while booted into Jaguar, I am getting that message.  That has to mean there is a problem somewhere, and I don't know how to tackle it.

Kelly, I'm confused too...here's another tidbit, but it refers to Stuffit proper, not Stuffit Helper.

There seems to be an epidemic of "Shared Library errors" around these parts today!

Dakota, if everything else in classic is working ok, I'd just remove the Helper from the startup items folder.

After you ran the installer, did you log out and back in?  I do believe that the Stuffit helper needed a relaunch after installation so it can put the helper menu in the Finders tool bar.

If you didn't do that, go to the Stuffit folder and double the magic menu file and log off and back in.  If that doesn't put the menu in the top right part of the tool bar, re-install again and reboot or log off.

You don't really need this helper program for Stuffit to do its thing, but the tool bar menu allows easy access to the program's preferences and some of its commands.

Whatever that means.?.

Check to see if you have any files pertaining to stuffit in the applications support  library, home library.

What part of stuffit deluxe were you trying to use bye the way.

Log out and back in again as stated.

Don't know what I did, but the problem went away.  Discovered something else, in the mean time - using IE, Stuffit does not automatically unstuff. Although Microsoft has given a workaround on their site, which they say works for some people, it did not work in my case. They state that if the workaround does not bring results, to contact Microsoft since it is THEIR problem.  Good luck to us all!
