Did anyone post to complain about losing iPhoto?
« on: October 21, 2015, 09:04:03 AM »
I didn't have iPhoto installed on my desktop so I didn't notice it becoming inoperable when I updated to El Capitan but I did on the Macbook Pro.  All I had to do to get it back is uninstall the app from the Applications folder and then went to the App store (where I had it on the Purchased list) and reinstalled it.  I had a little blip when I ran it the first time with it hanging but I ran it again, it offered to import the libraries from Photo and did so.  I think it found a library that had disappeared in Photo.  thumbup.gif

One thing to be aware of: When you run Photo, it will make a duplicate of your iPhoto library. That duplicate remains if you switch back to iPhoto. In my case, that meant about 360 GB of duplicated photos!

WOW Tacit; that's useful information, although I don't have near that much in my MACBOOK's photo library!

I just tried to drag Photos to the trash, and had a window pop up to tell me, " “Photos” can’t be modified or deleted because it’s required by OS X.", so how do I get rid of it?  MBPro (retina) running Yosemite 10.10.5. . .

I doubt you can, but that doesn't mean you have to use it. Just like the new Pages, Numbers, and Keynote versions, they are permanent installs with constant update notifications, when those come. The only way I've found to avoid these apps is to never ever double-click a file that would be opened by them. I just keep the Dock loaded with the versions I want and drag the file to that icon. wallbash.gif Hope someone has a better, more intuitive method. rolleyes.gif

So Far "Photos" is the only "*****" I have with EC. First time I opened "Photos" it required the iPhoto library to convert. I found it the Application folder a new "iPhoto library migrated to photos" It took some effort, but I finally found it did import all of the Albums etc from iPhoto. Today after reading the post from Tacit, that the original library in fact still exists however  it no longer shows in the Applications folder.  I clicked on the "iPhoto library photo manager" and sure enuff both libraries  seem to be there however neither can be accessed with the "manager".

Tacit: Did you "unduplicate" (seems like that should be a good word to me) the libraries??

I went back to using iPhoto and dragged the Photos library to the trash.

I've got to do this also!  Macbook Pro doesn't have a huge hard drive!
