Widget issue after latest 10.8.5 updates...
« on: November 05, 2015, 01:30:53 PM »
I just applied the latest updates that were available for my MacBook Pro Retina running 10.8.5 and suddenly I cannot get my weather widget to work. This is the widget that comes with OS X not a third party one.

It won't fetch any weather data at all for Calgary, though it had no problem before. Now it's just blank... I tried rebooting the machine, removing the widget and putting it back again, resetting the data for it such as the location. Nothing... blank?  dntknw.gif

Any ideas?

Most larger cities have a phone number to call for local weather and time... orNot to mention Menu Bar extensions...

What are "widgets", anyway? Mostly wasted cpu cycles with only Terminal controls to kill them! I think they are finally gone for good in El Capitan. Do you actually ever close your web browser?! laughhard.gif

OooooKay then!
Aren't we the comedian!  whistling.gif

Actually I still have Meteo running quite well in my menubar telling the temp. in F. I have kept the OS X Widget running til now for temp. in C. So it's just been a convenience thing and no... it's no really big deal, besides which I can install a third party widget which is probably what I'll do. I just figure that since Widgets ARE part of OS 10.8.5 maybe they should work??? but then what do I know...  toothgrin.gif

Browser??? What's that? ... oh you mean "Firefox" in my case? Yeah it's running most of the time, but I wouldn't check weather on it... when I have a WIDGET that's supposed to do it...  tongue.gif

I will guarantee a weather web site will give you lots more info that a 'widget'. OTOH, perhaps the temp is all you want. Most of us have access to a window which can usually let us know most of the 'weather' stuff (hurricane, flood, etc.) temps are a bit tricky unless it's well below -20 when the inside of the window starts to freeze over... Perhaps you could hang a thermometer or two on your most visible window? One on the outside for that temp and one on the inside for... something else!

Perhaps you could get one of these for a reasonable price: <Description and DIY Instructions>

Apple never supported Widgets much and they kind of fell off the update schedules... There may be an update to that particular Widget, of course... or not. wallbash.gif

Anyone here running 10.8 and the Weather Widget? dntknw.gif

Not sure this will do any good since this advice is really for third party apps:

"Open up System Preference, go into the "Security" pane, and then, within "Location services" check whether the weather widget is allowed to get your current location.

If it is currently checked, and your location is still not correct, uncheck and re-check it again. Note that you might need to unlock the preference pane by clicking on the lock icon in the lower left corner first."

I'm running 10.8.5 and my weather widget is fine.  dntknw.gif

Which weather widget are you talking about? The default Apple one? It doesn't work for me either - I think it's broken and I get the distinct impression that it's abandonware.

Anyway - there's a far better one for Canadians called WeatherOffice. It is by far the best out there - it pulls data from Environment Canada and if you click on the city, it takes you to the Environment Canada website. In my books, it's a winner and I use it daily. Shows 7 days worth of weather, updates every 10 minutes and the developer is still developing it and even responds to emails. smile.gif

BTW - Meteo/Meteorologist doesn't work at all in 10.10.5. More abandonware - last updated in 2012.

Sorry for the delay in replying... I've been ill AND I have a 2 month old puppy to run after...  wacko.gif

I'll post a picture of the little guy from my iPad. He's a Toy Manchester Terrier whom I have named "Sully." smile.gif
For such a little guy he's quite intelligent and sympathetic... he's been spending a lot of time napping on the couch with me...

Anyway... this started after the last bunch of updates for 10.8.5... first it was the Weather widget that comes with OS X now it is Meteo 1.6.1 as well.

It worked for awhile when I allowed access to Dashboard through the firewall but that isn't working anymore?? With Meteo... who knows, it has a history of working and then not working.

As for Location Services... there is nothing listed under mine.

It looks like this:

*edit**
I'm sorry for the stupid size of the photo... retina always fools me... it looks like a postage stamp on the computer!   wallbash.gif

OK Paddy... thanks for that bit of info. It sounds like perhaps I just hit "one" too many updates and axed a couple of things as everything worked before the update as it was... all settings as they are in System preferences. All that asked me for permission to pass the firewall now that I reset that is a system file called "net---something" I'll get the name.

OK... this is what the firewall looks like:

It was netbiosd that asked permission on my recent reboot.

Here's a picture of my little Sully... don't be fooled by the "angelic" look here... ;)Paddy... where did you get WeatherOffice for the computer? The one I found on the net leads to a free version for iPad, iPhone. Perhaps the App Store?I'd like to give it a try. :)Paddy... where did you get WeatherOffice for the computer?
