Help!! Can't copy entire HD to 2nd drive
« on: July 23, 2003, 05:15:14 PM »
I'm trying to back up my HD to a second drive, which is my preferred method of backup.  Never had a problem with OS9 - if a folder was locked, I unlocked it.  I just copied folder by folder, icon by icon, so I would know where the problems, if any, were.  On three folders - Library (involves two caches which won't copy), Applications ( disk utility copied but I get an error code 1000 if I click on it), and System (can't copy authorization trampoline)- I was getting messages that there were items I could not read or which I did not have permissions for. I clicked on "continue" rather than stopping.  I then made a note of the three folders and went into each one. So far thr above were the only ones I found - it was getting too tedious to check every item in every folder and sub-folder - so the question is, how do I make sure I get EVERYTHING copied onto the second drive?  How do I know if I missed something? Boy, was OS9 easy! wallbash.gif

Finally figured out two of the three, but on disk utility, I still have a problem even when I chage everything to read and write. It still says some items require permissions. Now what?

I'm not sure what you want to do, but have you tried Carbon Copy Cloner for Mac OS X?

I'm not sure how well dragging the contents of your HD to another is supposed to work.  There are a lot of invisible files that might not get copied.  A good backup program-I use Retrospect, but there are others-will back up the whole HD for you, invisible files and all.  It'll do it incrementally, too, so it shouldn't take so long after the first time.  I've found it to be a good investment.

Which programs other than retrospect? Someone earlier asked what I was trying to do - just to keep a copy of everything on my HD in case something goes amok - then I copy the app back from the second drive.

Here's a thought-why don't you just copy your personal folder in the 'Users' folder on your HD?  All other apps could be reinstalled from the program CDs, and even if-gasp-the whole HD crashed, you could reinstall everything, and then drag the copy of your 'user' folder to where it belongs and all of your settings will be back.

Try Carbon Copy Cloner for OSX as CyberPet suggested. Hasn't failed for me yet.

Yes. A third or fourth? vote for CCC. smile.gif

What worked on OS 9.x and before won't work with OS X. smile.gif

Will Retrospect and CCC copy  those files which I can't get to copy by dragging them?

Haven't used Retrospect. The latest version should. smile.gif

CCC is $5 Donationware that will do it all for you.

Just let it do it. Don't mix and match.

dakota:

You just can't copy your files to another disk as you have found out.  This is because you need root permissions for the system files that belong to sys account.  Even if you log in as root there are many invisible files you'll miss.

Solution:  Carbon copy cloner will work and retrospect is even easier if you retore to a new destination disk.  However there is another way, just make a disk image of the HD with apple's disk copy and drag it over to the new location. That is if you have enough free space to do it.

dakota & Bill:

Having an external 120GB firewire drive mounted doesn't garrantee you have enough free virtual memory space to create the disk image, because the system will not tap that firewire source for its internal virtual memory.  However, having a lot of RAM might overcome this shortage.

You may very well be right, because I got an error message when I tried to create the disk image.  Let it go for tonight - will attack the problem again tomorrow. sleep1.gif
