Difference between Single and Dual G4?

<< Still wondering about my SCSI question above. What's the recommended card to get to be able to work my Laserwriter Select 360? >>

The short answer:

Initio Miles Bluenote

The long answer:

These gentlemen know their SCSI

Caveat: various SCSI cards have various firmware updates and do not work with all Mac OSs.  For example, some will work with MacOS 9.1 and Mac OS X.x.x, but not with 9.2.  Some are upgradable.  Some are not.

If you are buying used, you may find yourself in the middle of this quagmire.  This sort of thing may be why the person is selling.

You might want to take the time to get good technical advice specific to the card and to your hardware and MacOS - and planned future MacOS upgrades - before you buy.

Regards,

Epaminondas

Thanks again Kelly.
Not sure what you mean, but on my G4/400 OS9.1 I have an Adaptec 2930 card for my Epson scanner and Yamaha CDRW.

I don't think I need a SCSI adapter for the new dual G4/1.25GHz/OSX?...
cause the CDRW is built in, and I would get a new scanner. Not sure what if new scanners use USB? I have no other SCSI devices that would need the card.

Then...
my Laserwriter 360 printer runs with a serial to Farallon adapter. I think this should still work?!
My Epson Colour 800 uses a USB to parallel adapter of some kind.

That should take care of all the hardware stuff. Anything I could be missing?
Kensington Trackball?

Well Raven. I'm confused by your question. smile.gif

"Still wondering about my SCSI question above. What's the recommended card to get to be able to work my Laserwriter Select 360?   "

If you don't need a SCSI Card for anything then don't bother. smile.gif

Your old card will probably work under OS 9.x in the newer machine.

OS X I'm not so sure.

There are plenty of Scanners that will work. USB probably.

If you want a trackball it should work fine.

I really can't say everything you might want.

You can always get things in the future. it's not all or nothing. smile.gif

Do you have a firm lead on a machine?

I think I have it all straight now!  smile.gif
And I know the model I want. Heading to Winnipeg next week (500 miles from here) and will talk to an Apple dealer. Wish me luck.
I appreciate your suggestions.
I know there will be questions when I start switching over from the old to the new.

Hope you're not going 500 miles on the chance they'll have one. smile.gif

I would place a call to smalldog and ask how long to get one. smile.gif

When you live in the heart of wilderness Canada, 500 miles to go shopping and do some other business in the big city is a "normal" thing to do. :-) It's no big deal!

ONE of the items on my list is to see what kind of deal we can cut for that G4.
Getting one from Small Dog and shipping across the border is a little bit of a hassle. As long as these guys are close, we'll do it. Still wondering if I hold out for another month or two, will the price drop?

Hey, and there's a Crosby, Stills and Nash concert!
Now that's dating me!!

By the way, Kelly, in those specs you referred to...
http://www.smalldog.com/product/44368
it doesn't say "dual". Is it?

At other supplier sites sometimes it's confusing whether it is or isn't.
