Setting up new iPad Air 2
« on: September 07, 2016, 09:41:04 PM »
I've gotten myself a new iPad Air 2 and was wondering... can I set it up using my MacBook Pro (info in signature) with a backup from my iPad 3 which is running iOS 8.2?

I generally detest iCloud, don't quite trust it just yet, and hate putting my stuff when I just don't really understand where the bleep it's going? wink.gif iCloud is not enabled on my iPad 3... I transfer stuff using iTunes mainly and keep backups on my MacBook Pro.

The only thing it turns of that kind of bugs me is the ability to "Find My Phone" but I don't have that on the older iPad either.

I'll probably use iCloud when they get it so I'm comfortable with it!

Oh... btw... does anyone know of an app that does .rtf format texts?

What you want to do 'should' be possible.  It is basically what I did when I got my latest iPad Pro.... From my imac's backup of the old iPad 2.

As far as the cloud goes, not very far with me either... We do keep our calendar and contacts on it as we want this synced/available to all our devices... I do have the 'find my xxxx' activated on all systems also, without problems so far...knock wood...

Thanks Bob, sounds OK then. smile.gif

I really just want what is on my iPad 3 and if something no longer works I'll go from there, but that has not been a problem at all yet. I'm the only one using all my devices and computer so there's no hurry for iCloud for any reason far as I'm concerned. I just hook up the iPad to the MacBook every month at least and back it up... move stuff around etc.

I could have the "find my whatever" app enabled too, I suppose... I'd just have to sign into iCloud which I've chosen so far not to do. My iPad 3 doesn't even have an account set up actually. I find the only place one can not get away from it is in iTunes to a degree.

OK... so basically then you have iCloud active but you just "ignore" it for things you don't want to go there? It look like on my fresh restore it is there, with my email but it would prompt for my password if used? I guess...  no2.gif

*later**

Seems OK with iCloud drive turned off. What I am having trouble with a bit is the Notification Centre, I have one app in there that works perfectly on the old iPad but not this one. Not that it's a big deal but it's one of my favourites interest wise. Exoplanet and Kepler. It keeps count of new planets on the notification centre perfectly on the old iPad but not this one... *shrug**

I upgraded to 9.3.5 too from 9.3.2

Yep, it's been that way forever, as far as I can remember. Great apps, like 1Password, allow you to sync things with different 'cloud' services. I've always used Dropbox whenever possible. I still have used barely a third of my free 7.75GB!

OTOH, I use both the manual, local computer and the iCloud backups for our iDevices. Two different backup sources should be everyones standard operating procedure, anyway. That way, there's no "trust" involved. thumbup.gif It paid for it already, why not use it?! dntknw.gif
