Confusion in iTunes... "again"
« on: September 29, 2016, 10:59:57 PM »
I've got a whole bunch of songs that are apparently "in the cloud" somewhere... they are purchased, paid for... you know, but the thing won't let me down load them because my credit card was maxed. So I have to verify it again... but I've paid for these things... DUH??? Wot has my credit card got to do with things that have been paid for anyway...

I go to play some music and a bunch of it isn't there until I can download it again.  wallbash.gif Does everything have to be so complicated?

Apple doesn't know what you might want to do, it's only software, ya know, it can't yet read our minds. But it always wants to know that your CC info, and, apparently, your balance are sufficient to make a purchase at any instant. Convenient for them, you, not so much.

Last time my account recycled (might have been a few years ago) I'm pretty sure they just wanted it entered again which I did but I also was carrying a balance with an iTunes card credit. If you have access to a $15 or whatever iTunes card you can add that and have a balance.  Are you saying it isn't letting you into anything?

No, it just wouldn't let me download songs that were in the cloud... which confuses me anyway... I had everything set the way I wanted it in MY music library and then the bunch of upgrades I did seems to have punted a bunch of stuff back into the cloud and needing to be re-downloaded?

iTunes just confuses the hell out of me! I've got some screenshots I can put up later. It seems every time iTunes gets upgraded I have to reset everything and all the iCloud crap just confuses me. You can't turn that off no matter what you do... so to me it looks like my iTunes is a big mess and ???

When you do up a smart playlist there is a drop down box available for iCloud status but I don't get what any of it means and can't find it in the help sections.

Yes, if you make them happy with a few dollars on your CC all is well with them... but me??? Not so much.

Also... there were some sound files from a show I used to watch... I just wanted to listen to them... kept a couple... iTunes took the liberty of adding them to the library... they weren't even in the iTunes Music folder... just a folder I use for temp. stuff.

So, yeah... the iTunes library is a mess and I don't have clue how to fix it.

What do you have in "/Users/xairbusdriver/Music/iTunes/iTunes Media"?

Also, do you have "Copy files to iTunes Media folder when adding to Library" checked?

I absolutely never use iTunes for anything other than syncing my iDevices. Any music in there is only what I've dragged in from a CD. I absolutely never buy any music from Apple via iTunes. But I completely agree that it is the most gosh-awful piece of software I know of (mainly because I don't do Windows, of course). And every time it is updated I have to figure out where stuff is... again! wallbash.gif

<rant>Right now, I have access (according to iTunes) to my iPhone and iPad via Wi-Fi, but is I click on either of them in the Devices section, the menu of what is in them simply closes. Apparently, the only way to see the Summary display (and eliminate all the lists of crud I could buy) is to click the tiny iDevice icon in the devices list. wallbash.gif I would be over-joyed, even exstatic to see apple strip every other use out of iTunes and call it iDevice Access. iTunes can then return to what has become the biggest conglomeration of junk sales displays it has become. There is absolutely no need for the duplicate display of music/video/podcasts/crap (excuse my French) in iTunes. All that is already in the Mac/i{hone/iPad/iPod/Mini App (and all other junque) Store. rolleyes.gif </rant> rant.gif

OK...

I don't have the Media Folder in my Music folder...
all my stuff, music, videos etc. are in:

"/Users/deekay/Music/iTunes/iTunes Music"

... why the difference... no idea, it's always been that way.

No... never! I'll check it if and only when "I" want to, which is not often. I do have it set to "ask to import a CD" when I insert one... so and then it's my choice. I do have a lot of my CDs in there, but they aren't what's causing the problem. I don't know if I'm seeing things or what but it ain't just store purchases I've got (and there's too many of those... NO MORE!) but it seems to take the liberty of "upgrading" my music at times. I'm sure not all the iCloud crud is from purchases in any case. I don't GIVE iCloud permission to do a thing so???

As for the rest of your post... well... YEAH!!! Exactly so...  wallbash.gif As I said it even took the liberty of sticking some sound files in the folder I use for temporary purposes I was listening to and didn't plan to keep in my Library! But would it let me load the ones I'd decided to keep... not on your life! rant.gif
... and then I had to dig to see where to turn OFF shuffle which it for some reason thought I would like... I DON'T.  sos.gif wallbash.gif rant.gif
On top of all that... one album I had bought in the store... cannot be completely downloaded via iCloud because of some missing URL or whatever... I've lost the album!

In any case... I don't intend to buy another single thing from the iTunes store!

*edit**
Oh... BTW... I've got some things that are precious to me... I'm not trusting them to iTunes at all anymore... I'm going to set up VLC playlists for them... it doesn't move anything anywhere... the original files stay where you all put them!

Hopefully some one here who actually uses iTunes will come by and offer some cluez. In the mean time, I suggest you search your drives for files with ".m4a", ".aiff" and even ".mp4" suffixes. It can help to have Finder  "Show all filename extensions" checked. In 10.9 and up (at least); Finder->Prefs->Advanced. Might be good to get a good "finder" app, despite its name, I find Finder to be extremely lacking in its "find" capabilities and ease of use. OTOH, it may be because I seldom use it for anything. Similar to my dislike of iTunes. rolleyes.gif

I think we need to remember that Apple designs things to be a simple for the user as possible, but that also means they don't make their apps very flexible. No different than Microsoft, really; "Do things the way we intend, or don't bother us." If ones digs into exactly how and what an app does, it can sometimes be forced to do things differently. But making changes to their databases, outside the app, can make it nearly unusable.
