Nice detailed review of Microsoft Office for MAC's!

A lot of detail on what's not there:

QUOTE
The first time I realized that Microsoft Office for Mac was different, I was waist-deep in a complicated Excel table. I knew that there must be some clever way to solve my data dilemma, so I googled a solution. And I found one, right away, only to discover that, mystifyingly, the tool I needed simply didn’t exist. I had the right version of Excel, and the tool wasn’t just somewhere else… it was simply gone. This disappointing difference was the first of many changes, some small and some big, between Microsoft Office for Windows and Microsoft Office for Mac.

For weeks now, MS has been badgering me to update. I am reluctant to do so, especially after reading this.

All of my personal record keeping is done in Excel and Word. Is there a suitable alternative for me?

Thanks!

Joe

What is "Excel" and "Word"? Never used or owned them. I did use FileMaker for both record keeping and page layout. it was the first app I ever saw that allowed text to be put in absolutely any place and orientation on a page! clap.gif Of course, it also included all the freedom of the Mac GUI.

My wife does have "Word" installed and keeps forgetting how to use it. Her last 'encounter' was in trying to use the normal 'scale' function in the Print dialog. Apparently, MS deemed that function un-necessary and simply removed it. The simple solution was to open the .docx file in Pages and print it in any way she wanted. rolleyes.gif If she absolutely has to send a Word document to the poor Windows users, Pages can alway save her work in that format.

My spreadsheet needs are extremely simple, apparently; I've never needed a formula that isn't available in Numbers. Alas, Apple has crippled both Pages and Numbers in an attempt to make them usable in iOS. I now try to remember to control click files instead of double-clicking to avoid opening their files in the "new" versions". wallbash.gif FileMaker became too expensive to keep updated.

I think Libreoffice wordprocessing and spreadsheets are good enough for what I do.  I do use Microsoft Office 2016 at work on the Windows machines; it's there and I'm used to it.  We also are use Google Apps at work and I find them far less useful and a lot harder to use.  There is also a database in Libreoffice 2 that can import/export enough file
formats I think it would probably be useful.  For a free download it might be worth it for you to try it out!

One problem? The database uses JAVA so you have to have that installed!
