Dead video on mini?
« on: March 31, 2018, 03:52:19 PM »
After completing the 2018-2 Security Update on the Mac mini, I can no longer connect through Screen Sharing. That worked fine before the update. It had to, that's the only way I've used the mini for several years.

I found what I thought was a video cable/adaptor to feed the small, old lcd monitor, but it was actually connected to an Apple audio to VGA adaptor. Apparently, one cannot get Video from the Audio out on the mini. wallbash.gif Naturally, I can't find an HDMI to VGA anything in the house. I may have never actually connected any monitor to this mini! If I did, I have no idea why I would have thrown away the adaptor.

At any rate, I suspect that if the video card is dead you can't use Screen Sharing either. At least I can still see, edit, swap files through Finder/Pathfinder. pc.gif

OK, despite the same symbol being used to label the Audio Out on the mini, I appear to have the cable/Apple Mini Display adaptor that provides video out to a VGA monitor via the Thunderbolt port. wallbash.gif What's with the multiple meanings of the same symbol?!

The box between 2 vertical lines is for audio in/out.

The Apple adaptor with the same icon

There is a chance that the problem is the mini Display port, but I don't have a HDMI to VGA adaptor...

Question #3 on this Apple Support page 'explains' the difference in labeling.

Have you ever tried working on two computers with nearly identical keyboards and mice and not enough room on the desk for both?! I have tried, always unsuccessfully, to run the cursor from one screen to the other. I am constantly touching one keyboard with my elbow while trying to use the other KB. I can't connect both the CCC and TM drives to the new mini until I get another USB cable, at least it will be USB3, there's not FW port on Macs anymore... flail.gif multitask.gif pc.gif steprake.gif
