Hover ads
« on: June 16, 2018, 01:04:55 PM »
Anyone else bump into these? There are a few sites where I allow ads to load, and a couple of sites that won't work unless ads are allowed. I haven't minded until they started using hover ads. If the page loads and my mouse is on "the" spot, suddenly I have to wait for this annoying large ad to load, then I can click it away, but I'd sure love to be able to allow non-intrusive ads only.

If you've not seen one, the bottom of the ad looks like the attachment.

You can always complain to the sites owner(s), I guess. But if it’s a commercial site, I doubt they would care, too many people still think they are “customers” when they visit a site. OTOH, not many sites can continue to exist without some kind of monetary support. Few people are willing to actually pay for a quality site (like TS!) so the site goes down the road to selling eyeballs, and any information they can gather on us.

Oh yeah - 2018's answer to popups. And then there are the slide-out ads/call-to-action things.

I'm running into more and more sites that won't display content unless I disable my ad-blocker. Sorry - but that isn't going to make me LOOK AT THE ADS. I just ignore them - but if they're annoying enough, I'll just go elsewhere. I know how hard it is to make a go of it with a newspaper these days - but I remain unconvinced that ads are the way to go. I do pay for some content - I have a digital subscription to the NY Times and also have a paper subscription to the Toronto Star (which allows me total digital access as well) and I think it's a better way to go, though people are very resistant to paying for online content, believing that it should all magically be "free".... So, at the moment, the only alternative model is ads.

Same here. I'm good at ignoring.

I'm with you; and I also pay for 2 news sites (one is my local paper and they offer a discount for online only subscription which I appreciate). I'd rather pay a reasonable price for sites that I find informative and helpful, as put up with the ads--or having them "steal" my information and sell. Wonder how FB would be if we had to pay and Z-man couldn't sell our info?
