I don't always see my iPad screen either but still like the "pretty walls"...
I have 4 spaces on my MBP so having a different wall for each one is handy... I see a little more of that one!
Generally for wallpapers I have just for use on the MBP... I use Adobe RGB 1998 but leave ones downloaded for the iPad at sRGB which they generally come as.
As for resolution I found this for the MBP:
If you have a MacBook Pro with Retina display and anytime opened the system information program, you might have noticed that the MacBook Pro's native resolution is 2880x1800px but you can only set it to the scaled version of 1920x1200px in the system settings. The reason for this is that the full resolution looks ridiculously small on a 15" screen. But if you got good sight, you can still work on it (my opinion).
So there's a workaround if you want the full resolution... most of my MBP walls are 2880x1880 and whatever... they look fine the way they are so don't think I'll mess around there.
iPad Air 2 that I have is 2048x1536... most walls I find aren't in that size so I choose something else but if you want you can choose 1024x768 and double it in Photoshop. Or... go for one a bit higher. It's not something I want to spend eons doing... I look in my favourite places now and then. Just about all of my lock screen walls are 1024x1024 and they look OK.
I don't even sync the MBP wallpapers to the iPad... prefer to keep them separate.
