Fairly Detailed Discussion on WiFi Options
« on: December 11, 2018, 07:25:59 PM »
Since Apple will not be offering any new WiFi hardware, we might want to get acquainted with the latest hardware options. Found this rather long (and sometimes extremely complicated posts) on the subject at TidBITS-Talk.

Those that use metric = #1 Measurement system
And the United States = The Banana system

After much hair-pulling and numerous replacements by Rogers of their absolutely TERRIBLE Hitron combo router/modems, we finally bit the bullet in July and bought an Asus RT-AC5300, and turned off the router functions in the Hitron. Haven't had a problem since and it's a great router. Not cheap, but we'd had quite enough fiddling and a good friend had one in a much larger house than ours and was very happy with it, so between that and the reviews, we were pretty confident it would be a vast improvement. We still have an Apple Extreme base station which is connected (wired) to the network and runs the Apple TV - it was easier to just leave it in place than take it out of the mix.

I'm pretty happy with the system I currently have. My son gave me a gently used Asus RT-AC68U. Before installing it, I read up on AiMesh and decided to go that route. I purchased a second Asus router of the same model and set up the mesh so I could extend the WiFi signal throughout my house and get a strong enough signal to my garage.

I have a 2017 Chevy Bolt EV that connects via WiFi, supposedly for OTA software updates. That hasn't happened yet. (long story).

The charging station I installed does connect via WiFi and that works well.

I just wanted to put in my bit about the AiMesh that Asus developed. It seems pretty secure and works flawlessly, so far.

I'd be interested some details about "mesh". Is it really new technology or just another name for what has already been around for several years. The speed of switching from one unit to another may be what is "new". And that could be simulated by having a cache in each unit and 'packet checking' in the receiving device. Or, it could just be magic!  :notworthy:

Maybe it is just magic! :dntknw:

Asus explains AiMesh on their website: https://www.asus.com/us/AiMesh/

I took a screenshot that has basic information to share.
