How NOT to clean your screen...
« on: December 05, 2018, 01:04:45 PM »
Have any of you ever tried to use just a plain dry Swiffer cloth to wipe the dust of your computer screen? Also dry. I did this morning and talk about sorry! It left an absolute awful smeary mess all over my MBP's screen... I'm still trying to clean it off! I've got most of it but around the edges and such.

I wouldn't recommend trying those at all!

Thanks for the tip. I'm allergic to most cleaning supplies and their hardware, especially those with handles, at least that what I tell my wife... :scram:

A quick google search reveals that Swiffer cloths have a coating that creates an electromagnetic surface which attracts dust. Apparently you can't find a listing of chemicals/ingredients used in dry Swiffers due to their claim of "proprietary forumula".

Pretty sure that the best way to clean computer screens ... well, read what Apple says:

How to clean your Apple products

Quote
Displays
First, disconnect the display from power, from its connection to a computer, and from any external devices. Then use the cloth that came with your display or another soft, dry cloth to wipe dust from the screen.

If additional cleaning of the display panel or case is required, use a soft, slightly damp, lint-free cloth. Avoid getting moisture in openings. Don't use window cleaners, household cleaners, aerosol sprays, solvents, ammonia, abrasives, or cleaners containing hydrogen peroxide to clean the display.

Don't clean the screen of your display with a cleaner containing acetone. Use a cleaner intended for use with a screen or display. Never spray cleaner directly on the screen. It might drip inside the display and cause damage.

Jim, your wife has got to be a saint! ... and just what is it about handles that makes you allergic?  :tease:

Thanks Kimmer... for looking up the Swiffers... and posting the instructions.
Generally I follow them carefully... I just blew it today! I generally use a microfiber cloth just to carefully wipe the bulk on the dust off the screen. Then I clean it with Omnicleanz:

and these microfiber cloths:

I've always had good success with that routine as both are excellent products. I have microfiber cloths from Klear Screen too... I use those mainly to remove the layer of dust at first. I used to use the Klear Screen fluid too but find that the Omnicleanz is much better.

I still haven't gotten all the "smear" off. The Omnicleanz helps but it'll take a bit more work. Something to be said for sticking to the "routine."

The problem with “handles” is that they usually lead to work!! They are always attached to things that are supposed to increase ones leverage: shovels, rakes, brooms, vacuums, lawnmowers, etc., etc. ... even that Swiffer pad uses a handle and look at all the work it caused!!!! :scram:

Oh... OK... I see! Valid point except in my case I used one of the flat dry Swiffer cloths... according to what it says online about the ones on the handle... they even recommend them for cleaning a computer... so it must be something specific to the flat ones. I wouldn't take any sort of swiffer near the computer again myself.

The flat ones can be scented, mine however are not... still they have something on them.
