What Does Cilantro taste like to you?
« on: January 05, 2019, 07:22:27 PM »
I can avoid cilantro most of the time but this Korean dish I had recently had some in it.  No one else in my family seems to think it tastes like soap; do you?

For me, cilantro (aka coriander) was an acquired taste. I wasn't sure at first, but I came to like it.

I posted it and it didn't seem to take; later the question posted but not the poll.  Now it's all there!  Probably my error or some
sort of latency thing!  Thank you anyone who offers their opinion! :)

I like cilantro. I buy a small amount, fresh, in the store and clean and chop and toss it in lots of dishes. My only issue is when I forget to put gloves on before handling and cutting, and then perhaps wipe my eyes. OUCH!

I've handled Cilantro and never noticed at being strong enough to hurt your eyes or whatever; maybe what I had was substandard! :whistling:

No, I tend to be sensitive to it when chopping.

Me again, thinking about coriander as we call it this side of the pond.

I love it. I could eat it on everything savoury.  Everyone else hates it so I am alone.  I do grow it and keep a chopped up pile by my plate when I can.  I was given a huge pile from the veg place where I work and I made coriander chutney which was ok, not brilliant.

All things coriander, for me, are very good.

Didn't know about the name difference. I find myself looking up loads of stuff when I watch the baking show, just so I know what we Yanks call things.

Well, here's another something learned today:

Quote
Thanks for your question. There is actually no difference between coriander and cilantro – they are the same plant. The herb is also known as Chinese parsley. The plant itself is a coriander plant – the coriander seeds that you have been buying are the dried seeds of the plant and the fresh cilantro you buy in the produce section of the supermarket is the fresh leafy green leaves and stems of the plant. You can also buy dried cilantro leaves in the spices aisle, but the flavor is not as strong as the fresh herb.

Fresh cilantro is aromatic and citrusy and should be added at the end of cooking time – it is also frequently used in fresh salsas. Coriander seeds, as they are dried, have a warmer, spicier flavor and are best in sauces, curries and stews. Although they come from the same plant, they have totally different flavors. Cilantro and coriander seeds are not interchangeable, so we don’t recommend using one in place of the other.

I've always liked cilantro. It has a spicy note to me...difficult to describe because there is nothing else that tastes like cilantro, really.  Maybe, for the people who think it tastes like soap, they just have different taste receptors.  One of my friends on the east coast swears that avocado tastes like soap to her...I find that odd to me, too.
Desktop iMac, running OS X El Capitan 10.11.6, 16 GB installed, with Time Machine and SuperDuper! backup on two external hard drives...and I like to bake.

I love all thing avocado, except for the baking of them or eating them with an egg or making them into chocolate mousse (which folk do and I consider a hanging offence).

At best, I just eat them with s&p or at worst, I make them into guacamole if going mushy.

I could eat one/two a day every day.

(they are very expensive here and I detest folk who grow them in their garden and say airily how they throw them away because they just have too many)
