Like so much 'technology', it can be used for good or bad. And as long as humans are making that decision, we will have problems. I appreciate that store trying to make visiting it safer. However, my cynical nature suspects it is more materialistically motivated; it might help reduce income loss from theft. Even reducing losses
could help customers if that expense savings is used to reduce prices.
Of course, the mere mention of a database conjures up the probability of the loss of control over that data. Those losses can be as mundane as inconvenience where that data may be needed. But that loss is rarely benign.
