PC users:need simple graphics program suggestion
« on: August 04, 2003, 04:01:03 AM »
I have a friend who needs to know how to reduce digital pictures to smaller size for emailing. He sent me three pics that were nearly 2MB each and overloaded my poor mailbox.

Is there a simple (free) PC program he could download that would be easy to use for creating jpgs of a size he can email without causing havoc? Something like Graphic Converter or preferably less complex would be great.

Thanks.   smile.gif

Kris, Perhaps this will help-

Able Graphic Manager http://www.graphicregion.com/products.htm seems like it is what you seek, but it is not free. And since I am venturing in to PC land, I am not even sure that will solve the problem. Thinking.gif

If Graphic Manager is not for you, a search of "graphic" on the Windows tab of VersionTracker may help.

Irfanview (free) has been recommended to me;  LView Pro has more capabilities and is not very expensive. There are said to be  pre-compiled Windows binaries available for The Gimp, a very full-featured Open Source image manipulation program.

I do believe that winZip is the standard bearer in the PC download world.  I think you can find a free copy on the net.

The above mentioned IrfanView is one of the best general graphics programs (free) for PC's I've come across, used it myself for the longest time.

I'd highly recommend it... smile.gif

Thanks guys.

It looks like Irfanview will do the job. I imagine it has similar file commands to the typical Mac program so I can coach him through it?

He isn't a very computer savvy guy and I haven't been around him long enough yet to bring about a conversion to Macs.   wink.gif

But give me time.   Devilish2.gif

It occurs to me that if your friend is producing these images himself, he probably has a digital camera. If so, the software which came with his camera can probably re-size the images. He may just need to be pointed to the software settings to use.

Thanks themphill but the pics actually are coming from his sister who has the camera. She sent the super large images to him and others who are also complaining.

I sent him the URL for the Irfanview program and he is going to download it and tell his sister about it as well.
It's a case of people buying new technology and not taking the time to learn how to use it properly. She obviously has the settings on the camera at a high resolution/quality which is not necessary for the candid type shots that  are being taken.
