Any way to manage junk/not junk in Apple Mail?
« on: November 23, 2019, 11:50:21 AM »
I used Airmail for probably a year. I got sick of it unexpectedly quitting just about every day so I went back to Apple Mail.
Is there a way to train Mail as to what is actually junk or bulk and what isn't? Some emails I receive every day to the Inbox and I send to junk, yet they still keep coming to the Inbox. Mail doesn't seem to "remember" this.
On the flip side, some legitimate emails that I'd like to get through to the Inbox keep going to Junk no matter how many times I move them to the Inbox. There used to be a yellow bar across the top of junk emails with a button to mark it as "Not Junk" but I no longer see that option.

My question is, how do you "send to junk"? If you are simply dragging them, Mail won't "see" that. It might be better to use the shift-command-J ("Move to Junk" in the Message Menu, not the "Move to >" command). Be sure you have "Enable junk mail filtering" checked in the Mail Prefs->Junk Mail. :)

You can also easily create/edit a Rule if you get a lot of messages with similar content/domain name/etc.

Rather than even bother with "Junque" mail at all, I use SpamSieve to just dump that stuff in my SPAM mailbox. Even then, you must 'train' SpamSieve by using its control-command-S shortcut that it adds to the Message menu. SS does learn and gets better over time. Because I use SS, I have disabled the Junk setting in Mail Prefs.

I can highlight an email in the Inbox and there's a little button right above it that looks like a box with an "X" on it. That sends it to the Junk folder.
I do have SpamSieve from when I was using the Airmail app. I guess I wasn't aware that it could be used in conjunction with Apple Mail. I just set up my Login Items to include SS. I'll see how things go.

If you don't have the three SS menu items in the Message menu, it is not monitoring your incoming messages. It also requests that you DISable the Mail Prefs for handling Junk Mail. Additionally, there is a Rule to add at the top of your Rules list.

It would probably be wise to download the latest SS (v.2.9.38) and follow the installation procedures for use in Mail.

Been plugging away at it this morning. I do have the SS options available in the Message menu. I wasn't aware of the need to disable junk handling in the Mail prefs but I've since taken care of that. SS tells me that it's the latest version. I think I'm getting there! Thanks.

The hard part (for SWMBO) is to actually 'teach' SS by using that "Train as Spam" menu item. Dragging a message to the Spam mailbox won't do it. If you use the menu item, SS will learn and it will even put the message into the Spam mailbox for you. Some software is 'smart' but we have to use it the way it's designed, not the way we might think. So far, software can't actually read our mind. :laughhard:

That's not a big deal. I generally check mail several times a day. So I just pop the Message window open and train them as they come in.
But each one I train as spam disappears completely. Doesn't seem to get sent to any available mailbox. I've been trying to adjust it this morning so that mail that's automatically filtered as spam goes to Mail's Junk box. Because on occasion it'll filter something out that I might actually want, so I like to view them before they go away forever.

You should have a SPAM mailbox. Check the SS supplied Rule and see if that’s where it’s trying to send them. Also double check that the SS Rule is at the top of the list of Rules.

I had more than one Spam box, as I have 4 different emails. I initially did read SS's instructions about setting up a new Spam box. But I could not delete all of the other ones, just a couple.
A little reading on SS's PDF instruction sheet this morning led me to a way to direct any filtered out mail to the Junk folder. I think it's working, but I'll take a day or two of checking in to see for sure.

Mail comes with a Junk mailbox, but I have only one "Spam" mailbox. There are two "spam" mailboxes in two of my four accounts (last image below). Note the different capitalizations. The mailbox names are Case-Sensitive. My "Spam" mailbox is only in the "On My Mac" list of mailboxes. That's where all my mail resides, I rarely even look in the four account lists and have them all 'hidden'. :)

1. Do you have a "SpamSieve" Rule like the first image below?

2. Does your Mail Rules list look anything like the middle image below? Note that the SS Rule should be the very first rule. I would suggest looking at all your Rules to verify that none are going to the "spam" mailboxes. Putting them in any of those mailboxes just makes it harder to check for false negatives/positives.
