Question for a Champion re Cyber Attacks
« on: July 17, 2020, 05:38:59 AM »
I have 1 Password and Clean my Mac - is it enough?
It has been suggested that I should have Sentry Defender - do I really need that?
- Sentry defender prevents both known and UNKNOWN cyber attacks and malicious threats by constantly analysing behaviour, looking for suspicious network activity, identifying modified files, programmes and operating systems components.
- All alerts are constantly monitored by a team of cyber security specialists in our 24x7 Security
Operations Centre (SOC). They deal with any issues as they arise and raise notifications as necessary.
- Unusual behaviour and malicious code is isolated, quarantined and/or killed within seconds.
The agent runs alongside any existing systems with no impact to performance, only notifying you when suspicious activity has been blocked.
There is the further suggestion - https://securitycenter.sonicwall.com/m/page/worldwide-attacks

Of course a business can say anything to us - but if we are really in danger, what should we use?

1Password has nothing to do with malware or "cyber attacks". It is simply a powerful tool for creating, using, editing and storing passwords and just about any other sensitive, important information about you and your family. Keep using it. There is no excuse for not having a good and different password for every site that uses one.

I have used and deleted several free and purchased 'malware' software apps and packages. I now only use ClamXAV3. It runs on every start up, quarantines any suspected files, and notifies me of its actions. it is one of only two yearly subscription apps I have. The other one is 1Password. ;)

I have never seen a need to use "Clean My Mac". I have never heard of Sentry Defender, but I find it a bit difficult to believe it can detect "unknown cyber attacks" without significantly increasing the load on a computer. That may be useful for a high-powered, government network. Not so much for a home-based Mac. On the other hand, if you surf lots of porn, shareware, torrent-based sites or click on email links, it is all too easy to get trash onto your drives. Play in the gutter and you will get dirty. :dntknw:

Thanks Xairbusdriver for your very useful comment.
I use my mac for business more than anything else, and will certainly try ClamXAV3, in this case I run a business and social network on whatsapp.

Running a business, I'd be more concerned about maintaining off-site backups of all data, especially customer info. Off-site, means physically under your control but absolutely not connected to the web in any way. A secondary backup could be via the web only if all connections are encrypted.
