Missing emails
« on: August 29, 2020, 05:06:12 AM »

The missus subscribes to a number of YouTube channels so gets email when new videos are put up. She created a new gmail address for them. However, the emails all stopped on August 10th. I sent a test email from my BT account which confirmed emails were getting through. With the help of a YouTube video we learned about filtering and blocking and confirmed there were no filters or blocks in her account.

She (and indeed I...) would be very grateful if someone can suggest where else we can look. As a last resort we can create a new account, but we don't like to be beaten  :D

Google. Hopefully, they have a folder/bucket for undelivered messages they don’t deliver. Even better, they have a white list that lets you define senders that you approve, even if they don’t. :wallbash:

I get all my youtube notice emails, and I use gmail. Mine show up in various "tabs", so I have to hunt for them. A couple of questions:

1. I'm sure you did this, but are they in the spam folder?
2. Does she use the tabs? If so, has she checked all of them? (Tabs: Primary/Social/Promotions/Updates/Forums) and the tabs are totally useless if you ask me. ;)
3. If she doesn't use tabs, and has a lot of emails in the main window, has she checked to see if the emails way down in the old mail possibly arriving with an old date? (I've had this happen.)
4. Double check that they aren't in the trash bin. (I've had this happen as well.)

Apologies for not getting back here yesterday but it was just one of those days...

Anyway, a poster on another forum gave us a link:

I saw a YouTube video yesterday (oh the irony) which suggested that YouTube notifications are currently very unreliable - and deliberately so...
YouTube link Relevant part starts at 7min.

After watching, OH decided she wasn't too bothered any more and just deleted the account. "I'll just start a new BT account - I can still see the videos I want."

However..... somehow, helpful hubby managed to sabotage her other email accounts and we "lost contact" in that I seem to have killed off the passwords on that machine. The MBP gets regular TM backups so I opened up the Library, where I found far too many plists that just might have been what was needed. So if someone can guide me to the right one, I'd be very grateful... again. And just hope it restores the passwords too.

Are you saying you don't use 1Password?!

1. TM might help, but Keychain Access might be faster; fewer 'possible' hits. Just look for "gmail" or anything with "mail" in the title. :dntknw: TM may or may not have passwords in any plist you try, and even if it does, it won't (shouldn't!) be humanly readable, so you still won't actually know what that pw is.

2. Then, go get a good password manager. They allow you to make titles, notes, fields that will make it extremely easy to find a password and other critical information (in almost any area of your life).

Neil, it's definitely time to get 1Password. With 878 current passwords, I'd be lost without it. There is a mobile version too (free as a companion app) - so all my passwords are available on all devices, and in my case, synced through Dropbox. I have the standalone license version (which is still an option, though they barely mention it on the website), because that's what I've had for eons and it works well for me. My husband's Mac is also synced to the same account, as we don't need to keep our passwords separate. There are extensions for all the major browsers which makes using it online very easy. Highly recommend it - way better than KeyChain, IMHO.

Sincere apologies for the long delay in getting back to this thread - been such a busy week it didn't leave enough time to get on here for a proper session.

Thank you for the info - Keychain Access allowed me to solve the riddle and all is back to normal.

I will get on to 1Password - promise...
