Airport modem replacements
« on: September 22, 2020, 11:36:52 AM »
I fear my AP Extreme is extremely dead, at least in its WiFi capabilities. While I use the Ethernet side, the rest of the house needs the wireless function. :wallbash: :tears:

Anyone have positive or at least encouraging :coolio: experience with other brands? :whistling:

I'm off to check on reviews (from strangers and shills) and prices.

I bought a Netgear Nighthawk at the recommendation of a Best Buy rep who actually came to the house to see what my needs were. https://www.bestbuy.com/site/netgear-nighthawk-x6s-ac4000-tri-band-wi-fi-5-router-black/6156904.p?skuId=6156904
I guess I never realized how many devices we have but there are many. I mainly wanted something with the range to operate my outdoor security cameras. One is approximately 60 feet from the router and about 15 feet off the ground on a pole. The other is mounted on a detached storage building, 40-45 feet away. The third is basically next to the router and pointing out a window.
The router has the range to operate all of them. We also have a couple of iPhones, a couple iPads, 2 Arlo cameras, a Fire TV stick and an Nvidia Shield via ethernet for TV viewing as well as a Roku TV that's connected via wifi.
I'm sure I've left some things out but the bottom line is that it's functioned well for about a year now.

Thanks. The Nighthawk always ranks high. I'm also looking at the TP-Link Archer C2300. No rush, turns out the problem was not the router.

And the problem was....?

We've got an Asus - it's a beast. Friends of ours who live in a 5000 square foot house with concrete floors and steel beams (first builder/owner owned a concrete company) had one and said it worked well - and they were right. I can even get a decent signal out at our pool - 150' away. https://www.amazon.com/ASUS-streaming-Quad-Core-AiProtection-GT-AC5300/dp/B071DPCKQ6/ref=sxin_9_ac_d_pm?

Some of those Extremes are very tough; I had one that had been stuffed up into a drop ceiling and it was covered with with dust but it still worked.  The problem was a rodent had chewed on the network cable.  This was in a school project building that housed/harbored malcontent boys! and it wasn't my choice to have the thing in the ceiling!

The problem was (is) the HHD in the Mac mini. Being cheap, i bought the base model with a mechanical drive. TechToolPro started giving me S.M.A.R.T. warnings but can't, of course, fix it. At least it is still covered by AppleCare, so it goes to the only Apple Authorized Service in town for further testing and hopefully replacement. I'm literally limping* through the weekend until the appointment Monday. :Look:

Actually, I'm limping because I broke loose a bone spur on my big toe! Wearing a hard sole boot for a couple of days. Allowing me to postpone several 'honey-dooos'! I'm thinking I might be able to run the vaccuum by the end of the month... maybe. :dntknw:

I have two ASUS RT-AC68U routers synced up as a mesh. I wanted to extend my WiFi to my detached garage where my Bolt EV is charged using a ChargePoint station.

The mesh system works well and I like that ASUS keeps things up-to-date regularly.
