"shut down" only restarts

I'm having a problem here with my G4 Sawtooth on OSX 10.2.4- first time since installing OSX.  When I choose "Shut Down" under the Apple Menu, it starts the process, the little circle stops early and then the computer restarts itself.  Could anyone help here?  How can I shut it down, and what might the problem be?  It's never done this before, and all I've done is allow the computer to stay on overnight, which I do on occasion.

I am not sure of the cause or that the following is a permanent fix, but it may be worth a try-

To force a shutdown:
Hold down "command", "option", and "control" while pressing the "Eject-CD" key. This should shut down the machine immediately.

Holding the Power Button on for 8 seconds or so should shut it down.  

10.2.4 looks pretty buggy to me.

I encountered this symptom a number of times in older OSes, and it was the always result of an extension conflict or a corrupt preference file.

Note that I am only using OS X sporadically, for experimenting and educating mice-elf (I am using 9.1 as my day-to-day OS, and when I  boot into X, it's 10.1.5) so this advice might or might not be useful for or applicable to Jaguar in general or 10.2.4 in specific.

I had it on my iMac to.
Someone at TS adviced me to unplug all external cables, except for keyboard and mouse (original ones).
It worked for me  
Next day i just plugged everything back and never had the problem since than.

Well, I did unplug my firewire cable, but I also shutdown via the keyboard power button.  I haven't booted back up yet, but I will post back if it happens again.  Thanks.

I had this problem once with my G3. It turned out to be a bad cable. Check all your connections. If they're ok, systematically replace cables with other ones, if you have some spares. It's worth a try! Good luck.

I can only agree and second your links to a "read before install". Up until now, OS X upgrades have largely been deliciously smooth, but not this one. Apart from the modem and Gimp warnings I've reported here myself, things seemed quietish for days after it came out, then suddenly a whole flurry of "issues" were posted on many boards, not just MacInTouch.
It obviously took time for people to discover that all was not well. I've yet to see anything serious for which some kind of fix hasn't been found, but I suspect that more of us might be a little more careful to rush in next time around.
In some cases (and I'm among them), going to Apple for the stand-alone combo update sorted out one or two problems that the Software Update version didn't, though I have yet to figure out quite why.
This upgrade makes the usual precautions - a back-up of key items first, and running a disk permissions check, MacJanitor and DiskWarrior afterwards - not just sensible but really necessary!
