Optical keyboard/Mouse
« on: August 06, 2003, 12:00:25 PM »
Good day one and all,

Let me first say that I haven't posted lately cuz my iMac (series B) running O/S 9.04 has just been purring along (thanks RHP for your timely maintenance schedule which I do bi-weekly). However, I do visit daily!!

The point of my post is that I am thinking of getting an optical keyboard and/or mouse.  I am soliciting TSers advice as to which one(s) to purchase.  I await your input with anxious anticipation.

Johan
Hmmmmm. I know you think you understand what you thought I said, but I'm not sure that what you heard is what I actually meant!

My experience with cordless optical mice was....they EAT batteries. If you have stock in Duracell, this might be ok. I tried a Logitech cordless optical mouse and found myself feeding it two AA's every 2-3 weeks. This gets old, very quickly. Also, it did NOT like rechargeable batteries at all.

There is at least one newer one that sits in recharging cradle when not in use - that seems a little more sensible.

My favorite meece are the M$ optical ones - 5 button Intellimouse Explorer on my G4, slightly cheaper 3 button optical one on my PeeCee. I've bought a number of them for family and friends too - they also seem to like them. One caveat - the newer Intellimouse Explorer is only for righties - if you're a leftie, go with the cheaper three button optical mouse. (generally about $19, though sometimes as cheap as $10 on sale) On my TiBook I have the Kensington PocketPro optical. It's very nice too - and has a handy self-storing cord.

Optical mice are great - and I would never go back to using a mouse without a scroll wheel. Still can't understand why Apple mice don't have them!!!

As for keyboards - haven't tried any wireless ones, but the wired one I like is the new(er) full-size Apple one. I splurged and replaced the original one that came with my G4 Sawtooth (it had black keys and the letters had rubbed off in places...) with a new white one and like it a lot. It also has some nice things that Apple keyboards never had before - like a forward delete key. If you can, go to a big box type store and try a couple of different ones. Each brand of keyboard has its own "feel" and some people are very particular about it. And then there is the issue of ergonomics - some people like the split/ergonomically shaped jobs. I don't - I find myself missing the keys all the time, but it's probably all in what you're used to.

Paddy, have you forgotten the old Apple extended keyboard which came with Performas, my 9600, and I'm sure a multitude of other models? I've been plucking my forward delete key for many years now.

One thing I've found with my Dad's eMac keyboard is the keys are closer together. If I extend the same as I do on my old keyboards, I end up hitting a different key. It also has a much cheaper, lighter plastic feel...not as solid and firm as my home boards. Even so, my favorite keyboard is on my Wallstreet.  Aaahhhh...

Also putting in my two cents for the Intellimouse 5 button optical (works with lefties) and the Kensington 5 button optical (also ambi). Both have good feel. Click is a bit heavier with former but slides a bit smoother than latter. Each would be a good choice as are infinitely programmable.

Guess the old brain IS getting a bit fuzzy. Had the Sawtooth for almost 4 years now... and it had the compact keyboard. The iMac also has the compact keyboard. I spend almost no time at all on Son # 1's beige G3 these days & forgot that the older beige models had that feature! tongue.gif
