From Macfixit by way of the dealmac Forum. smile.gif

You have to use Cocktail. Turn off delayed acks.

Cocktail > Network > Optimize

Seems to help my Dial Up a little.

You have to do this after every restart.

It doesn't make any difference on my cable connection. I'm seeing 1.2 to 1.4 kbps download pretty much all the time no matter what I do.

There was a time when I used to see speeds of 1.7 to 2.4 kbps, but not any more. I have no room to complain because the service I pay for is 1 MB download and 126k upload.

 rolleyes.gif I guess I should be happy with what I have.  huh.gif

Kelly:

I did that the other day with Cocktail, and it did make any noticeable difference on my cable modem.  But my cable modem consistently runs at 1.5kbps anyway so I didn't think it would speed things up much.  I also use Speed DownLoad and it works well downloading on 8 channels.  I can get a 90MB file downloaded in under 5 minutes no BS

Instead of using Cocktail every restart, try BroadBand Optimizer. It has always worked well for me (giving about 200 kbps speed boost) on my Cable connection.

That's what I'm using now.  I didn't want to have to reset those prefs each time I boot, because I never keep my Mac on, so Cocktail was dumped and broadband optimizer took it's place.  My mom didn't raise a dumb teletubby!   rolleyes.gif

Thanks to you all! I just installed Broadband Optimizer and it seems to speed things up, but because speeds vary so greatly with my cable system, I am just not certain. Still, every little bit (and byte) helps.

Typical speeds this morning: 1.5 to 1.8 MPS with extremes at 1.3 and 2.2 MPS.

At first I wondered if what I installed is even working. But thanks to the ReadMe, I was at least able to verify via Terminal that all the required stuff (I try to avoid all that geeky talk) was where it is supposed to be.

I'm getting really strange reports after starting up with Broadband Optimizer.

One try at a speed test site showed 5596.7 kbps!!!

The next tests showed a more realistic 925, 944 and 1200 kbps. So, it appears the nothing is changed, on the average, from the default settings set by OS 10.2.6.

This morning, I got through to my service provider tech support. I know now why I'm not seeing any changes when I "optimize" my network settings with scripts like Broadband Optimizer.

The cable in my area is "controlled" by Click-Network, a city operated system. When they first went "live" and offered cable to the people, that had no buffers set up to limit the speed of their servers.

For awhile then, I was receiving cable service equal to a T-2 connection. That's not the case any more. They have reigned in the speeds so that if you're paying for 1 Mbs service, that's what you're going to get.
