Doesn't look like an ordinary Worm anymore acording to the Yahoo! newspages.
Might stay for months, and they are affraid for new adaptions of this Worm, which can even be more sticky to eliminate.

And us Mac users... well... we can just keep on

Actually we mac users do get affected too, especially those who happen to have an ISP that runs on Windows instead of Unix. Had a few friends that complained about slow speed and problems with retrieving their email.

For those of you with friends that uses Windows, inform them how to stop this and quickly since the virus spreads from computer to computer, without any email program. It duplicates itself to 20 unique IP-addresses it finds in a network.

Step 1: Start the computer in Safe Mode and delete the file called MSBLAST.EXE.
Step 2: Download the MS Security Update ASAP from Microsoft's site.
Step 3. If the person is behind a firewall, block port 135 before going out on the net.
Step 4: Push the start button and Windows update.

Just heard on the local news...

MSBlaster has shut down/crashed the Maryland Department of Motor Vehicles.

Still, M$ remains the OS of choice for the US Govt., esp. the Department of Defense.

I just had a friend come to me saying he has this "msblaster".

The news circulating says that most will have to take there PC's to a technician to rid the virus.

Will that fix work for everyone, Petra?

I hear there are cleaners out there. Just have to know where to find them?

Symantec is always a good resource too though. Here is a link to the page detailing the info about MSBlaster and directions/links to tools for eradicating it. It won't take a PC Tech if the PC owner can read and follow directions..

From the link to Symantec you left it looks like the thing is quite selective on what OS's it affects too... mainly only Win 2000 and XP... so I'm safe I guess with my Win98se as well...

I've gutted it of all the Microsoft IE and OE related stuff too though... including the updater.

One benefit of that has been that my machine crashes a whole lot less than it did with the typical install for any reason...

I was just printing out the stuff on the Symantec site. Will be burning my friend a CD to run the fix.

Hopefully he can follow directions, he's not the brightest person when it comes to computers.

Well, my friend surprised me. He emailed me to tell me that he ran the cleaner from Symantec and then reinstalled the patch. And all is well, so far.

Thanks, folks, for the great information. I'm going to see my elderly parents in a few days and I need to check their PC for this.

I told them about it on the phone, but (bless them

) they're just not able to understand what it's all about. They don't use their computer much so I'm hoping they'll be lucky until I get there.

It's the defenseless PC users like them that I really feel for. Makes you wonder how this hacker scum can be so heartless. Come to think of it, scum doesn't have a heart so it makes sense.
