Moving! Want to keep SBC Web hosting
« on: August 15, 2003, 01:43:46 AM »
Through SBC here in the Bay area, I have both DSL and Web hosting which supports my domain name. I am moving to the Beaverton, OR area and will have Verizon as my phone service provider. My plan is to keep SBC web hosting yet cancel my DSL account here in Dublin. Then, if Verizon says I can get DSL through them (its iffy - I may be too far from central telephone station), I wil do so and still maintain my web host as SBC. Does that make sense? It is also possible to switch my web host to Veriuzon as they support the protocol.

If I acnnot get DSL from verizon, I will have two choices: 1) connect via cable (Comcast) which is available at my new location. Comcast does not support web hosting. or 2) Use a satellite service for DSL. I have DirecTV already at the new home. I would just have  to put up a new type of "dish". Since I have DirecTV here in Dublin, they will install in bevaerton and reconnect me for $25!!!.

Does anyone have an opinion as to the preferable alternative if I cannot use Verizon as my ISP?

(By the way, my problem with SBC failing to connect my outgoing mail to some of my receipients has not been resolved. They have been trying to solve it for 4 weeks now. They say it is a problem with the reverse DNS failing in my case. In fact, they are now discounting part of my monthly web hosting fee. I solved the problem by sending via my DSL server rather than my mail smtp server!!!)

Thanks for any help you can give,

MamaMoose

I don't know Comcast, but I do know Direcway and DON'T DO IT nono.gif  nono.gif  nono.gif

Keeping your webhost with SBC, if you're happy with the service, is not a problem, you sign in "remotely" now, your actual physical location doesn't matter.

Using NS 7.x, just make sure you're outgoing STMP is set correctly and you can send from any  identity.

Wait a sec....didn't Diana post something a while back, about Verizon and them not allowing an email to go out unless the return address was @verizon.com?

-edit-Yep, she did.  Go to page 2 and do a Find for "Diana" or "Verizon"

Do not fear your enemies.  The worse they can do is kill you.  Do not fear friends.  At worst, they may betray you.
Fear those who do not care; they neither kill nor betray, but betrayal and murder exist because of their silent consent.

Tom:

See this thread, especially Tacit's illuminating description of SBC's "darker" side.
Blocking "spammers"

Though the thread begins with AOL, it's really about blocking by many ISPs that I originally attributed to forces other than SBC

I'm having much less trouble recently, but it's still out there. This thread may nor may not be useful in your deliberations.

There are literally thousands of places to host any website. And keep your domain name (assuming you don't want "SBC" in it!). It's not too late to search for an alternative providers. I use DogBark and others have mentioned other good ones (often Mac flavored).

I would be careful of satelite service. It is usually only normal dial up speed for uploads. Be sure to find out about that before signing up. Also, be careful of DSL speeds, just because you are 'in the service area' doesn't mean you will have the fastest available speed.

I have great service from TW/RoadRunner here in Memphis, but all cities are not equal! But we still have backup (dial up) service from Mindspring/Earthlink (for other reasons). The site I maintain is at DogBark, not connected to either ISP's except via the internet. And the domain name is registered by a fourth company located who knows where.

Well, I talked to SBC today and I was able to cancel my local phone and DSL service but was able to maintain my Web Host account woith them. Verizon told me that they were not sure that they could give me DSL at my new home and that they would wait until I was connected and then come out and check.

So I am in a wait mode. The latest problem we all have who have web hosting is that if the web host is from a different ISP than supports your DSL, you cannot use the web host's SMTP server to send mail. Your DSL ISP will probably prevent it as many have instituted special authentication procedures to prevent  you from spamming. To solve this the trick is to use the DSL ISP's SMTP server but to make the return address in yopur mail client to point to your domain name on the web host server.

If Verizon cannot  support DSL at my new home, then I will switch to Comcast cable DSL. They do not support web hosting so I will then stay with SBC as my web host. If Verizon cannsupport DSL then i will switch to them for my web hosting.

Whew, this a tricky business Groaner.gif
