Airport/Jag - File Sharing?
« on: August 18, 2003, 08:08:41 PM »
I picked up an airport base station and am happy with it.

The one problem I am having is file sharing by way of airport between the 933 PM [OS 10.2.6.) that has an airport card and the powerbook (OS 10.2.6.) with an airport card.

Both 'puters show up when cmd+K is implemented yet I get an error trying in either direction too talk to the other.

I've looked at threads where Paddy has some good input on the subject by doing a search here at TS.
The one (ya right . only one) part that is confusing is the machines ID or is it the routers ID? Plus I believe Paddy mentioned 192.168.0.xxx by the DHCP .. others could be 192.168.1.xxx. Well either I'm looking in the wrong place for such a number or I'm just plain walking down the wrong road because mine is 10.etc etc.
In either case, I tried that also. Still get this error.

Been combing around at apples site. Here for example. Haven't really found anything.

Any ideas guys?

I don't have Airport, I use a D-Link WiFi router, but have you run Airport Setup Assistant and Airport Admin Utility? I recall there were a few updates to that as well... sorry that I can't help you with specifics.

To get your Airport IP just have a look in the Sharing Prefs.

Hi guys.

Sorry it took so long getting back.
I ended up resetting the base station back to its factory settings and starting from scratch again.
Went through the whole nine yards again with Airport Setup Assistant.

Screenshot from PB
Screenshot from PM

As for the most currant updates, I have them guys.
This time Karl I just looked around in the Airport Admin Utility.
Well sort of ....
Found where you can change the airport ID and did. 192.168.1.1?? forgot now.
Ran permissions afterwards ... did the bit with turning on file sharings and made sure the airport cards were on ... still got that error in either direction.
Tried just using the complete IP and clicking onto the appropriate target.

Changed the pass ... zilch

SOooooo I reset the base station again and changed the name and pass ... zilch.

Changed (reset) again because I did not like the name and pass ... no way.

Made sure the base station wireless part was still working for the PB, cooked up a hamburger and played iTunes out on the front lawn while checking my email accounts .. stuffed my face. smile.gif

History background: Took my PB down to the local Mac store the other day. Told them about this file sharing jive.
They were sitting around dreaming about the G5s. So real quick like they (one guy) set my PB up on their airport network. Com+K the first time and there was my 'pal' PB along with all there displays and two iMacs they use for processing plus the techs own PB. Worked flawlessly .... fact they grabbed some of my icons. <gr>
Never thought about looking at the IP during all this .. /grrr\

Brought it back home ... went back to that error again.
Just by process-of-elimination alone, think this is pointing towards a loose goose in the PM perhaps.?. Yet I can 'hardwire' by ethernet Cat5 between the two 933s.
Pram maybe???

 What's this all about?

You must login as an authorised user. For example:

Connecting from the Desktop to the Powerbook you'd use powerbook's admin user name (the short name) and it's password. Vice versa when connecting from the PB to the Desktop. Or you could use any other user name and pswd that you have setup on each respective machine.

You seem to have authentication problems and not connection problems. Don't dwell on the IP numbers, resolve your "auth" issue.

I'm in like Flint! smile.gif

Kps.
Not sure if your 'how to sign in' was the culprit or what I did.?.
Yours of course but hey I gotta take credit for some midnight/early morning brain storming. <gr>

Run down:
Three or so in the morning.
Started thinking about partitions on my pm and their assigned user names.
>> most folks get up and raid the fridge. Me; Brain cells -floated another tune-.
Marbles are there ... in order is another issue << biggrin.gif

Ran through all the partitions (with active OS's) and found Bill Stein/Bill Stein's/Bill St as authorized user etc etc. Passes were ok.
Changed all users the same.
Shut her down and headed to a jobsite around 4am.
Was thinking about 'pram' in the back of my mind.
Did my thing at the site and scooted home.
Pram city here we come. Done. Double/triple checked all settings.
Before giving Mr.file-sharing a shot, I checked with TS and saw your post on 'how to'!

Tightened up the seat belt and went for it. Error again
Then I typed in the proper name and slapped the appropriate pass down.
(((((Yeah baby!)))))
Did this several times in both directions. Works flawlessly every single time. biggrin.gif biggrin.gif

I not only can access one partition but all the partitions or just a 'selected' group if needed. All through wireless.
Wonder what's next out there? Heard there's color TVs now. <gr>

SO. Now I am a happy camper with this decision.
Until DSL plants its butt here, I'm good-to-go with wireless dial-up and file sharing.
Can 'hardwire' by ethernet if needed for the other 933 or pick up another airport card.

Thanks!

Great link Kelly!

Hey! Where were you at 2 - 3 in the morning?
I could of been eating a peanutbutter and cheese sandwedge instead of playing Bill the geek.
