USB 2.0 Mini Flash Drives
« on: August 19, 2003, 04:18:58 PM »
I am in the market (I think) for a 256MB USB 2.0 Mini Flash Drive.

I know nada about these things, but I most value your counsel and wisdom. So please, if you have comments, opinions, recommendations, thoughts, musings, or ramblings, about which brands are good or bad, where bargains may be had, pitfalls to be avoided, or most anything else you feel would help my quest, please do chime in.

Your 2ยข is appreciated. Really.

TIA

Love 'em. Absolutely, positively love 'em.

I have one myself, and I don't know how I ever survived without it. Had I known how useful it'd turn out to be, I would've bought it a long time ago.

Hi,

I can't speak directly about the flash drives never having used/had one, but for the price, consider this option:

USB 2.0/Firewire 20G Hard drive - Storix

I have two of these, and both have undergone constant use for over two years now...nary a glitch. I move mine between my linux desktop and the winxp laptop regularly and both machines recognize it without any special drivers. It runs off the power supplied through the USB port so even though it comes with a power adapter, I've never needed it. The two USB cables are a nice touch. I leave one in my laptop case and one attached to the desktop so moving the drive is a snap. I paid $259 each for my disks so the current price of $150 seems very reasonable. It's truly small and very classy looking with its leather case. For the prices I've seen, the extra disk space for the 20g drive compared to the flash drives just seems worth the extra expense to me..smile.gif The reliability has been flawless..and the link above will provide you with multiple reviews saying the same thing.

Note: I've included my Amazon affiliate ID in the link. wink.gif Feel free to remove it if that seems "forward" to you. smile.gif

see ya,
Diana

thanx.gif  for the feedback. I never would have explored the option of the Storix drive so that suggestion, coupled with the sterling endorsement, has set both of my synapses (synapsi) in motion.

With 20G, I could even copy my entire OS X volume and have room left over. I wonder if  it is partitionable. Humm... Thinking.gif

I use Pendrives routinely to exchange stuff between PC's and iMAC's at work and home!  The only real problem is remembering to shut the device down before you remove it (drag the icon to the trash on the MAC) and close the device down in the device manager or on the taskbar in Windows XP!  I've even got options to boot up from the thing on my PC's (although I've not tried it I have had it try to boot from the pendrive when I had the BIOs configured incorrectly!

I should have mentioned this earlier, but high on my list of requirements is the ability to (easily) exchange data with PCs.

At present, I am favoring the 20G Storix mini drive, but rule nothing out. So indeed the above comments are most beneficial.

Thanks again!

The biggest advantages a USB flash drive has over a USB hard drive are prize and convenience.

My USB flash drive is small enough to fit on a keychain; I carry it with me everywhere I go. And at $30, it's hard to beat on price.
