I know that there has been some discussion lately about viruses and how a Mac doesn't have much to worry about. What I would like to know is the virus protection and detection that is built into TechTool Pro 4 (when and if it ever is shipped

) satisfactory?

You mean that vaporware virus protection? Actually TTP virus protection is better than no protection, but I never relied on it. Also it was such a slow pain in the butt, that I keep mine disabled.

TTP does not offer updates, so what you get "protection from" is anything known before its last release. Not that you need much protection, but, if you're paranoid like I am

get Virex. The updates are monthly, and there's no monthly fee, just pay for it and install it. Now, the monthly updates might not be anything but a false sense of security (I can't think of that medical term for a sugar pill right now to save my life) but at least it gives you one more reason to "mess with the Mac" each month.

I hope this does not start a Virus war, but these are the features I looked for when selecting a virus program:

• Scans for both PC and Mac viri and Trojan Horses (I am very apprehensive about even forwarding a PC virus to PC colleagues).
• Can scan stuffed files & folders without expanding them.
• Runs automatically and unobtrusively in the background.
• Can automatically scan downloads & removable media upon insertion.
• Free monthly updates (electronic updating nice, but not required).
• Works with both OS 9 and OS X.

While I have great distain for Norton's utility programs, it is my experience their Anti-Virus program (v9.0) meets all the above criteria.

Of course, to each - his own...

TTP virus scanning is less than optimal. I strongly prefer Norton Anti virus v. 9.0 (part of Norton System Works). Virex is perfectly adequate as well.
