Have you heard of Jimena?
« on: August 31, 2003, 02:19:50 PM »
Probably not, since the "news" business being what it is, nothing really exists until it makes the headlines in the NYTimes, the WashPost, the LATimes. Naturally, then, you already know about the hurricane . . . in the Caribbean.

But, unless you're one of Al's regular correspondents, or you know someone who commutes to the Sandwich Isles who's wondering if this coming week really is the best time to do so, then you probably have missed this fascinating display of meteorological power. . . in spades!

Jimena is HERE, real time

Richard, I got your email and will get back to you tomorrow when the storm is supposed to be passing our island.  I pray it will be passing.... So far it's pretty nice weather, a little windy and the surf has come up a little too.  Forecast is for Jimena to graze the Big Island by about 50 miles with winds above 100 mph at around 7 am HST.  Barring that it does not drift north, we should be okay on Oahu with some high winds and high surf.  Will know more, much more, after 7 am and throughout tomorrow.

Got to go now and tie down any loose objects around the house.

Please say a prayer for us TS's.

Aloha and God Bless,

Hey Al, Hurricane Parties are some of the best!
Don’t forget your survival kit....... Beer
and a flashlight so you can find it. wink.gif

Come the end of the week, Fabian a Cat. 5 should be either a hit or miss out this way.

Al:  As one veteran to another, my best thoughts are with you.

Batten down, plug and fill the tub, fill as many containers as you have with clean water, make sure you have batteries for the flashlight and radio, don't go out to photograph-those that have experience don't need the reminder, those that haven't experienced won't understand anyhow.

Stay in the "most indooor" room, get your Mom to come over now, that way she won't worry about you and vice versa.

Remember, if it does hit straight on, that the "eye" brings true meaning to "calm before the storm" and is fleeting.

Have a phone that does not depend on electricity-I talked to people during the 2 1/2 days of Elena in '85, and a propane cookstove is handy AFTER the storm, when you can go back outside, or open lots of windows for ventilation.

Don't open the fridge or freezer more than ABSOLUTELY needed, the freezer will hold for two days if left alone.

Candles are never to be unattended.

Critters are just as discombobulated as you, give them a chance to get away, and if you have pets, keep them close to you.

And the one I remember most from Camille in '69, mandarin oranges can make you sick if you eat them for three or four days straight, so take Vitamin C instead.

Do not fear your enemies.  The worse they can do is kill you.  Do not fear friends.  At worst, they may betray you.
Fear those who do not care; they neither kill nor betray, but betrayal and murder exist because of their silent consent.

Since Hilo receives about 250 inches of rain annually, they may not even notice down there! sleep1.gif

Looks good for your arrival on Tuesday Richard.  smile.gif  Expect it to be a little wet though and a bit windy.

Hi Bernie!  smile.gif

LOL, SB, that's a good one.  Probably no party here, but I talked to my nephews yesterday and we may go hit the big surf, catch some waves later.

Bruce, I'm relieved to find that information to...  smile.gif

Wow, Jennie, thanks for the info.... I still have to have some of it taken care of, cause we should see high winds and a lot of rain.

SB and Jennie, take care, after this scare, Fabian is making me nervous.  Your in my prayers.

Surfs UP!  Thanks again friends for the good thoughts and prayers.

Al: Just looked ar the "eye" . . .waht eye?  Good news, for sure!

Jimena looks like a non-event about now, unless you're sailing to Tahiti in a 15 ft. boat!

See you later this week.
