a friend's iMac 333 strawberry.  9.1, I think, don't know how much ram, cause I can't get it to start.

Plug it in, get a start up chime.  Don't have to touch the on switch; it does it as soon as it is plugged in.  Then nothing.

This started after a hard crash, which was becoming more and more common.  He uses the machine for Photoshop, LARGE .psd files, a small file for him is 3M, normal is ~35M.  He can open PS 5.5, but PS 6 will freeze the machine.

I suspicing a full hard drive, he still has the stock 6G, but I can't get to that until it starts.

Thinking.gif I've ordered a new PRAM battery.  Do you concur with Step One?  Or do I need to start somewhere else?

PRAM Battery is good yes. smile.gif

Just plugging in though.

Something stuck on the Keyboard?

Can you switch it?

Could be Power Supply.

Try to Boot from CD when you get the Battery. smile.gif

Yeah..if you can, put an OS9 CD in there and boot up off of it.

Nothing hooked up to it, not even the keyboard.  Just plug it in and it bongs, then nada.

With this machine, there's no telling.  There's things on that hard drive that could make one's hair curl.  Apps from 6x forward, prefs that were copied over from a previous whatever, leftovers from file sharing with a Win box......

Replaced the battery, nothing.  Reset CUDA, nothing.

Went asearching and found....not good news.  It is a dead analog board ±$275 repair. board alone-$165 to $195 depending on Revision.

Common problem with tray loading iMacs, easy test, open it up, disconnect monitor, if it starts, then board is bad.  LEM has an article about it. along with numerous posts at MFI.

The price of a fix would go a long way towards an emac.

He's thinking I'll order the analog board I saw on ebay for $75.00 and put it in for him.....dang, the things one learns when one is asleep.

Patience not being one of my strong suits, there is a board for $75 with Buy It NOW!.
