Frys is empty of PMs
« on: August 24, 2003, 08:32:51 PM »
Stopped at one this morning. Not a single tower on display.
Asked a worker walking by ... "sold out. New ones coming in tomorrow."
Really? "That's what we're told but usually just a few. Few days later the rest will show up". You know which model {as if I didn't know already}?
"Nah. I'm just passing through. I work in the TV department".

Interesting, Bill.

I stopped by Fry's in Sacramento last Thursday, to observe that "the cupboard was bare", there, too.

Same nitwit response when I inquired, too. Ah, Fry's harhar.gif

Just caught this on another board RHP.

You may have heard that the G5s were shipped not too long ago and expected at Apple Retail Stores not long after. You may have noticed the G5 displays hanging in the windows of Apple Retail Stores. And unfortunately, you may have noticed that the Apple Retail Stores don't have any G5s. According to 3 local Apple Retail Stores, the G5s are being detained in Customs for unknown reasons.

I have seen reports that lots of stores have the 1.6 Gigs and some 1.8s. smile.gif

Some people have their machines already.

Customs? I don't think so.

The Duals have apparently been given priority to Educational Institutions.

Can't find where I read that.

I'm not buying one anyway, so I can handle it ok. wink.gif

You are correct Kelly! smile.gif

I saw my first G5 today at a comp-usa.
They (some salesguy and a mac rep) were calling it the introductory model.
Which it is.
One only. They don't know when any more will be coming in.

Had a good time playing around with it. smile.gif
Fast!!!! With just 256 of ram, opening up iPhoto and resizing the pics plus shuffling them around was almost instantness.

They are taller. Which we/I knew. Didn't know that they were deeper.

The look: So professional looking!!!!!!!  I'm sold on the looks. <gr>

The ONLY way I knew a fan or fans were running was by sticking my ear up to the box! biggrin.gif

Thought I saw an OS 9 in there but never got a chance to go back and check.
So that I'm not sure about.

Took a snapshot of the apple system profiler. Click Here
Notice the OS10.2.7.

Also took some pics.
Left them some what large for clarity.

Nice pics Bill.  Now if I could only give one of those a test drive too.   smile.gif   A test drive is all it would be since, like kelly, I won't be getting a new computer any time soon either.

Looking good Bill.

Too bad they have that Masterlock on the G5...  Devilish2.gif

One thing I noticed in the ASP is the two 128MB chips taking up half of the RAM slots. If I were buying one I'd sure demand a single 256 instead.

The mac guy let me hook my iPod up to the front firewire port and grab all the movie trailers. He knows I'm on dialup and most of the trailers were way to large for .... smile.gif

Yeah Kris. Man did I want a look-see inside that puppy.!.
Too many people hovering about. He didn't want to pull the key out of his pocket. <gr>

Wish I knew where some of these trailers came from because one or two are pretty cool.
One is called Ryan vs dorkman by blinding light production.

Saw a 1.8. G5 today.
Never was able to look inside the 1.6. that I saw last week but this one I did.
Flipped that latch in the back and the whole side comes off.
Just like all the pictures floating around, neat and impressively designed.

Fans/noise issue:
From what I saw, one word ... none!
A large part is due to the plastic membrane cover just inside the outer case.
While that is snapped in place you can not hear the fans even by putting your ear right up to the plastic. Unsnap it (which seems way to easy btw) then you can hear the fans.
Snap the plastic membrane back in place .. no fan noise.

I started to take a closer look inside but a whole flock of folks saw I took the cover off .. stepped back for a second and four heads were in there already. <gr>

So ... OK! I'll run out to the car and get my camera and take some shots then.
Half way in the parking lot my bud calls me by cell and tells me don't bother because one of the salesmen came over and put the cover/side back on and then locked it.
By the time I made it back there most of the crowd left except a couple of good ol' boys who was explaining to this salesmen why not having a 'displayed' machine showing off its selling features was a bad idea.

Went in one ear and out the other.

Never guess where this all took place. smile.gif
Bet RHP will know right off. biggrin.gif

I agree with Krissel.

It just doesn't make good sense to put 2 128 Ram sticks in 2 of the slots.

What do you figure Apple pays for Ram? Heck the machine holds something like 4 gigs of memory! huh.gif

Not sure but I thought I saw that the 1.8. had more than four dimm slots.
