Sounds like dry bearings
« on: September 16, 2003, 10:53:06 PM »
Original equiptment in a beige G3 MT vintage 1998

I was reading email when suddenly the hard drive started to make a grinding noise. I closed all the open applications, then opened a few, didn’t seem to effect it as the noise continued. I read Kris’s last post in Dust in the Wind and then it stopped. Noise lasted about two minutes.

On a rare occasion in will make short noises when seeking on the drive, but never that loud, long, or in idle mode. My thought’s on this is a lizard, ant, or just dust got in there dragging a bearing down, or......... it’s time to R&R the hard drive.

Any thoughts? sad.gif

My superdrive started making infrequent clicking noises which became steadier. It died last Thursday.  My new drive is due on the 18th.  I would suggest backing up your drive while you still can.

Thanks for the heads up Gmann, done! wink.gif

Oh wait, it might just be the fan! The noise returned for about a minute, it sound almost tinny, high rattle, thin aluminum, and I think I can still hear the Hard Drive as the noise fades away. It’s coming and going now, it start to rise in noise level, RPM? then slowly fades to silence. maybe I should replace the fan also, or in lieu of?

Where that WD40? Marvel Mystery Oil? 3 in 1 Oil? Never Seize?

Pack them bearings........   nono.gif
