Getting to the ROOT of things
« on: September 16, 2003, 08:11:01 AM »
What's with all these Asian fonts in my OS X System Fonts folder!  mad.gif

I want them Out Out Out!

Don't need em and never will. They also junk up my fonts list.

I tried yanking them out, but that folder is write protected. These are the fonts stored in the System>Library>Fonts folder.

I figure I need to log in as "ROOT".

Or do I?  Thinking.gif

I just want to unlock that folder, pull the fonts out and get back to work!

If I DO need to login as ROOT, is that a purely "command line" project?

Thanks!

Z...

I'm afraid to mess with and take those fonts out.  I tried that once and it screwed up everything.  I ended up having to do a system re-install.      blush-anim-cl.gif

Also some of those asian fonts names actually have english character faces.

Also when I took out several fonts I thought wasn't needed bang iCal and other programs, would not run anymore, and I had a hell of a time finding which one it was that the programs needed.

As for your question on booting as Root and the command line, nope there is none, you are just another MAC user account on the machine but with the power to climb mountains, leap tall buidings, and type faster than a speeding bullet.    tongue.gif

You probably installed these when you installed the system.
====================================
To enable root easily;

Open up your terminal while booted into OS X normally.  Type
 sudo passwd root
 Enter your admin user's password at the prompt, then at the next prompts, the new root password, twice.

Root will now be enabled.

==================================

The following is a list of the fonts I have in my system/library/fonts folder;

Apple LiGothic Medium.dfont
AppleGothic.dfont
AquaKanaBold.otf
AquaKanaRegular.otf
Courier.dfont
Eurostile
Geneva.dfont
Hei.dfont
Helvetica.dfont
Keyboard.dfont
LastResort.dfont
LucidaGrande.dfont
Monaco.dfont
Osaka.dfont
OsakaMono.dfont
Symbol.dfont
Times.dfont
ZapfDingbats.dfont
???????? Pro W4.otf
??????? Pro W3.otf
??????? Pro W6.otf
???????? Pro W3.otf
???????? Pro W6.otf
???????? Std W8.otf
????.ttf

(above with ? marks are asian fonts)
====================================

You can take any of the asian fonts out if you want and should have no problem.
To be safe, just put them in another folder on the desktop or hard drive to save for awhile.
====================================

You can't remove any fonts from here;

library/fonts

The system uses these.

You can add or remove fonts from here, your user fonts folder;

user/library/fonts

Z, Perhaps the highly rated freeware Monolingual will help: "It removes unwanted language resources from OS X, saving 100-200 MB in disk space." http://homepage.mac.com/jschrier/index.html

Just select the languages you want to bannish, click, and voilatout!. Uh, I mean 'that's all."  wink.gif

Pendragon, thanks for the link. I installed and used ver. 1.1.2 and it removed all of the language data for the languages that I checked. However it does not remove fonts that are root. I still have 65MB of Asian fonts in my system library. It definetly was a big help on the languages tho. biggrin.gif
