Aftermath of Isabel
« on: September 19, 2003, 05:50:10 PM »
In the Washington DC metropolitan area, the storm has now passed. But problems continue. Mainly, they are of the inconvenience variety, e.g. no loss of life or major injury. There are however, more than 700,000 “customers” who do not have electricity; and it may be several days before power is restored. And after a day or two without power, that is a bit more than inconvenient-especially for the elderly, hospitals, etc.

As for me, my home suffered little damage - a Bradford pear tree is now in a neighbor’s yard and it may have wiped out a fence and the neighbor’s satellite dish. More will be known when the debris is removed. But I am content knowing that there is nothing that can’t be fixed by spending my grandchildren’s inheritance.

Many, even though they have power, are upset because they are still without cable TV. As for me, my angst is that I must use a dial-up until cable is restored.

Glad you came out of it unscathed. We just got rain and some wind up here, 'twas nothing at all really.

Glad to hear it Harv! Jane landed without a fuss but Baltimore has it's problems. It seems that there is no power where she's staying, though it may be up by now!

For a class two, it certainly caused a lot of damage and loss of life. I've heard the area hadn't had such a storm since 1933 when the flood levels were set. Here they were set in 1928 and haven't had a storm surge to meet that level yet.

I guess in some regions this storm surge height set new records, but I can't remember where?

Standing water is a major problem, it's been one around this region most of the summer, some people haven't seen ground for months. One guy down here uses his boat to get to his car and he picks up his neighbor on the way to the road. biggrin.gif He said that it wasn't too bad, since his tractor's ruined and his lawn is under water, he hasn't had to mow all summer!  thumbup.gif

Now the power companies are stating that over a million customers do not have power and that it will be "days" before power is fully restored. How many days exactly was not given. In nearby Northern Virginia, all four of water treatment/purification plants also lost power. As a consequence, 1.2 million customers must boil their drinking water. But of course, many will find it difficult to boil water without electricity.

And oh yeah, still no broadband.

Thanks for your words of cheer!

Glad it wasn't worse Harv. smile.gif

I'm sure the grandkids will understand.

They'll enjoy the stories of the Storm.

Harv,

How big was the Bradford pear tree before it went flying? It's a nice tree.

My brother in Ellicott City, MD said it was quite a storm.

Glad you made it through in one piece.

As far as the dial-up........you may just get used to it. I here it's used to treat mania these days. wink.gif
