ghost printing at startup....

Hi,

At startup my epson 600 prints some incomprehensible words,( re installed the drivers) do you see a solution?

Couple ideas.

Go to:
AppleTalk Control Panel
Choose User Mode from the menu; select advanced.
An options button appears in the CP; select it.
Turn AppleTalk off.

Make sure correct printer is selected in Chooser.

Also this is from an Epson page about partial and garbage printing on the 600.

Rebuild your desktop and install the updated driver with extensions off.
B.   Confirm the printer:
1.   Make sure that both the Mac and printer are off.
2.   Disconnect and reconnect the cable from both ends (switch cable ends).
3.   Turn on the Mac, then when at the desktop turn the printer on. Wait for the printer to finish initializing.
4.   Go to Chooser, click once on the Stylus Color printer.
5.   Make sure that the port is set correctly or click cancel and select the correct port.
6.   Confirm the printer. It should tell you a new printer was found. Click OK.
7.   Then another box will appear listing your Stylus Color printer model. If it doesn't do that then it's not talking to the printer. EPSON recommends a Mac to IMG2 p/n F2V204 cable made by Belkin Components.
8.   Make sure background printing is off and close Chooser.
Also, the printer only has a buffer to receive processed information from the Mac. Allocate more memory to the applications you're printing from, it'll help them process the information properly. The applications usually have bare minimums to run. Double or triple the current preferred size, if you have the extra memory you can go beyond these specifications, of course. If you're using background printing, turn it off or allocate between 3-5000k to the Epson Monitor 2.

Tried the rebuilt desktop , re install driver and goyt the same problem...tried also a"conflict catcher" test and found that shared library manager PPC was the problem ....whithout it it's ok but i can't disable it cause it's needed for other applications ,specialLy for my AOL connection to the Net...   :-)

What can i do?

Did this just start recently? If so then something has changed that is causing this conflict. Have you trashed the usual preferences relating to the OS, like Finder, system prefs, etc.  just in case?

Are you sure AppleTalk is off in the AppleTalk panel as well as the Chooser?

Have you checked your manual that came with the printer to see if there is any kind of button settings that you can activate?

Are you able to print normally after the initial garbage comes out at start? If it is just that one time I'd keep a piece of old paper on the top of the pile and just throw it away.

Do you have the printer on at startup or do you turn it on later? Whichever you do, do the opposite and see if that makes a difference.

Do you print every day on a regular basis? If not you can always create a separate startup extension set for when you wish to print that excludes the problem extension. Or startup with the space bar down, disable that extension for that session then restart to do your online work.

I know this isn't the answer to your problem but it's a temporary workaround until someone else has a better idea.

Had a peculiar one happen the other day, maybe it'll help?

Turning Appletalk off using the chooser would NOT release the printer port.  I had to turn Appletalk off using the control strip.  OS 9.1.

Yes, it showed off, both in the Chooser and in the control strip, but to free up the printer port, I turned it back on using the chooser, then turnd it off in the control strip.  Three attempts using the chooser before the work around came to mind.

Being sure AppleTalk is off is not simple. Even if it says it is off in the Chooser it may still be on. You have to turn it off in the AppleTalk control panel as I described above and the Chooser as well.

Jennie mentioned a situation where she had to try different combinations to get it to go off. This may be the case for you.
