Looking for a printer that plays well with OS X
« on: February 28, 2003, 05:55:00 PM »
I finally found this forum!!! Yeah!!

I'm hoping someone can recommend a printer that plays well with OS X... in other words, one that doesn't leave me banging my head on the desk in frustration because I can't get it to print.   .

I'm using a 700MHz eMac with OS 10.2.4.  I've read that the HP printers don't work especially well with OS X, so I think I'll skip those.

I'm looking for something with a digital card reader in the $250-$300 price range. Any help will be most appreciated!!

I'm so glad I found you guys

Hellen

I run OS 10.1.5 and use an Epson 777i with no problems.

Hellen, MacAddict's March issue tests 18 printers.  I am guessing by your price range you are wanting a photo printer. From what I see the Canon S830D photo printer is written well of.  Says images have nice balance; fast image printing; slots on front to read CompactFlash and SmartMedia.  System 8.6 or later.

Cartridge Price looks very reasonable.  $12 dollars for each color.  I assume that means yellow, magenta, and cyan come is separate cartidges.

What printer are you currently using?  Another bit of advice is to go to the manufactures website and download the latest drivers or updates (also explained in this trusty MacAddict Mag).  The article says neither HP or Canon printers come with OS X drivers so they must be gotten through the website.

I have an Epson 820 that works perfectly with OS X and the photo quality is great.

Do you know something I don't? 10.2.5?

To answer the question about printers... I use an "oldish" Epson Photo Stylus 870 and an HP LaserJet 2100TN and they both work just fine in OS X.

As scanner I have a Canon (forgot the model number) that just came out with drivers for OS X as well, so I've been in luck.

Hi, and welcome to TS! I'm using an Epson Stylus Photo 820 and have been very pleased with it since I moved to OSX. Like Bob, I also have been impressed with the photo quality prints.

Welcome to TS, Hellen!

Maybe you could save even more money and frustration by explaining exaclty what problems you are having with your printer.     There are enough people here with similar (even exact) hardware that will be glad to help!

iGuy, you have to excuse me... I made that 1 into a 2... I've got dyslexia so I was probably reading it too fast. Sorry!

Hi, and thanks for the replies so far   .

I have 2 old printers, an Epson Stylus 600 and a Personal LaserWriter, but neither one is USB.  I want to get something new to go with the new eMac. I graduated from a 233MHz Wallstreet Powerbook and a 6500/250, so nothing I own is USB compatible.

I wanted to make sure whatever I get is OS X compatible.  I've had plenty of experience with products that are supposed to be Mac compatible but turn out to be anything but. I thought I'd try to save myself the headache this time.

Thanks bunches!
