Internal CD,Zip and floppy stopped working?
« on: October 04, 2003, 09:46:46 PM »
On the MT/300,OS 8.6. that I posted about on this thread concerning another matter.

None will 'now' not bring up the appropriate media icon to the desktop.
The CD tray will except (open/eject) any written cd but no icon on the DT.
Same with the zip. Yet the zips get stuck.
Floppy ... who cares.
Hours before I inserted a couple of zips to transfer over some small files with no problems.
Now zillch.

I did rebuild the DT with TTlite and did the normal dumping of certain preferences; finder etc.

Now! I did clean up the 'puters folders with old odd-ball out dated apps/programs.
Threw a few away.
Couldn't run norton,TTP etc because they were on external cds .. no utility installed except DFA which came up fine.

I was able to plug in an external usb zip and it worked fine.
So I pulled anything of real importance onto zips.
My thinking was if all else fails, reinstall 8.5. to 8.6.
Cool trick since the CD drive doesn't work. duh!

Never had a chance to open the box up.
Life got in the way.
Any ideas what I should be looking for when I do.
Could I of dumped an extension or whatever by mistake.
The Apple cd driver is there and the correct one.
Nothing in the disabled cp or exts folder.
Extension manager came up with nothing.

First thing I'd try is zap the PRAM.

Bill:

I had that happen to me twice in the past.  One time it was in hardware. The SCSI cable came loose and wasn't terminating properly.  It affected both the ZIP and CD drives not allowing them to read the disk and mount, but the drive mechanisms worked fine.  This was on an older OS 9 machine.

The other time it happened on my G4 using an early version of OS X, but this was not ATA hardware related.  The ZIP worked fine, but the CD couldn't read the disk or mount its icon.  Just kept silently spinning.  It turned out to be a corrupted driver.  I couldn't say which, because I just replaced every Apple system file preference that had to do with the CD.  Rebooted and the CD came to life again.

Hope this helps...   smile.gif

I'll see what happens by zapping the pram Kbear next time I'm on the machine.

SCSI cable coming loose or just plain loose connection was my first thought.
Don't know because I've not opened it yet. Back of my head kelp thinking how could three media devises be controlled by one cable though.

Any other ideas.

Yeah. Could be a SCSI issue. That does funny things. smile.gif

Or. There's a lot of CD Drivers to keep track of.

Zip problems.

Had a few minutes to zap the pram before leaving. Nope.
