Modem problem on dial-up...
« on: October 05, 2003, 11:26:39 AM »
iMac DV-SE (graphite), OS9.1, built-in modem. Generally, I connect to ISP before opening any program (IE and Outlook).

Symptoms are: modem will dial ISP's number, go through authentication and then (usually) lock up at the 'setting network protocols' message. If it is left long enough, sometimes it will get to the panel giving connection details. That will show anything up to 48,000bps, but 'Connected to unknown'. It can be left for up to a minute without anything more happening.

Sometimes I can cure it by coming off line, going into modem control panel, switching modem setting and then back to v90 and 'saving changes'. Sometimes I have to dump the preferences and I've had to do that twice in the past week. Most of this is just an irritation, but I'm worried it is symptomatic of something more serious that needs to be dealt with and would appreciate advice.

Thanks in advance.
Neil

You could try trashing Internet Config Preferences. smile.gif

Keep the old Copy just in case.

Just drag it somewhere else. It will make a new one.

You'll have to reset a lot of Settings.

Make Screenshots of them or something.

More info.

Morning Kelly - thanks for response. It  connected with no problems this time... fortunately biggrin.gif . The real puzzler (for me!) is that it dials out OK, connects to the ISP's number and it's then the problems start. I did think it might be coincidence that dumping modem prefs were curing it, if only temporarily, but it's too consistent. I've also previously killed off Remote Access prefs to create new ones, but that hasn't cured it. Guess I'll have to try the Internet config prefs, but that won't be this morning - have to get off to work (we STILL haven't won the Lotto  wallbash.gif  ). However, I'll keep an eye on TS during the day.
 thanx.gif  again

Because I don't have my ISP as my home page I don't often access it, but did today and found a service notice click here for pop-up warning that action taken by Virgin.net to stop viruses might cause connection problems for customers .

Perhaps actions by your own ISPs are causing some or even all of the problems that have been noted in the various posts about email and internet connection problems.

PS: Thanks again Kelly
