But I've tried the "search" function, and it gives me a ton of links, but nothing that tells me if I can view .avi files. Oh well. . .So, I'm appealing to you guys to tell me whether I can or can't view them, and how, if possible. I asked the guy to send it to me in another format, but I'm not sure whether he can or not.

MPlayer should play avi files.

Hi Ed,

If it is a normal AVI file Quicktime should play it. Also, Windows Media Player, MPlayer and VLC.

If it is a DIVX file, you will have to try MPlayer and VLC. It is a hit and miss thou with DIVX files playing on a Mac (DIVX files use the AVI file extension, but are different).

Al's is right about Quicktime playing some .avi's, but I only know about OS9.x... that you "may" need some extensions as well if you don't have them:
Indeo Video versions 3,4 and 5 and Intel Raw Video.

I have them all stashed if you need any...

You can view AVI files...sometimes.

Trouble is, there is no standard called "AVI." AVI movies can actually be in any one of about...oh, I dunno, 50 different standards or so.

Some of these work on the Mac; some don't. The problem is the "CODEC," or compression technique, the AVI uses. Some AVIs use CODECs that have been ported to the Mac, some don't; some of these standards are patented, some aren't.

So with an AVI, you pays your money and take your chances. In fact, some AVIs won't even play under some versions of Windows.
