Printing in Jaguar on a beige G3
« on: October 08, 2003, 06:02:46 PM »
Beige G3 400 MHz ZIF, 768MB RAM, 40GB 5400 RPM IBM, 80GB 7200 RPM WesternDigital, 17" Viewsonic A72f, AV card, Time-Warner RoadRunner Broadband Cable Internet, 250 MB external SCSI Zip, Yamaha 8424 external SCSI CD burner 'Frankenstein', Kensington TurboMouse5, OS 9.2.2 and 10.2.6  (on separate partitions, actually on separate drives), GoMac, CopyPaste, Graphic Converter, FeltTipSoundStudio, iMOnTime, et.al.

The printer is an Epson Stylus Color 740, connected to the G3's Printer Port, and works flawlessly in 9.2.2.  I have not even begun to look into printing in Classic emulation (patience, patience), I'd just like to be able to print in native X mode, but when I finally managed to find the Print Center (and it wasn't easy), there seemed to be no way to configure or select a printer connected to the Printer Port, presumably because newer Macs do not come equipped with Printer Ports.

Anybunny already go through this and remember what was required, so that I don't need to 'reinvent the wheel'?

FYI, I do have a USB PCI card installed in this puppy, and the Epson has a USB port, so that is a potential work-around, or maybe not b/c I have run into and read about situations in which some USB devices won't work properly (or at all) on Macs that do not have 'native' USB...

kbear,

Can't say for sure about using the serial printer port.  I don't think OS X supports it.  But that USB card should work.

I used a USB pci card on my beige and an Epson SP820 and it worked fine.  It even print shared.

Here's some write up from Epson's web site about OS X and their printers.
