Monitor Swivel base
« on: October 11, 2003, 07:56:14 AM »
The triangular foot or base on the new monitor broke in shipping.  It's a Apple 17” Studio Display, which BTW is stunning, clear acrylic.

Know of a place I can purchase a replacement?

That's too bad Jennie.  ohmy.gif

How does the Monitor itself look/work?

Have you considered SuperGlue?

One here for $129.  ohmy.gif

Try Ebay or someone somewhere with a dead moitor for parts.

Jennie,

Superglue should work. I would try the liquid type that you can et at hobbie stores for putting together plastic models. It's super thin and you can hardly see it. It bonds really well.

Tried Super Glue, nope.  the monitor is 46 or so pounds and the weight just "bows" that psection of the foot.

Hey, I've got to go into the real world yet today, maybe it was old glue!

There's always Gorilla glue! It will hold anything. I used it to hold even the hard plastic thing that you roll the cord up on our vacuum cleaner and it's still there!

Tough stuff!

Jennie.
Don't take what I'm about to post to seriously. Mainly because I think the person who posted this info on another board way back when could be working with a forty two card deck or less.

Furniture clear calking tube!
Apply the substance in an even/level layer.
Once curried it will not only hold XX amount of weight but it will act as a rubbery cushion to boot.
----
I use various calking on a regular bases.
What I use IS NOT ANY TYPE OF GLUE!
Big difference between 'bonding' and a glue type of adhesive.

Though there just might some type of calking out there for your purpose.

Jennie, was the shipment insured? If so, you should definitely file a claim for a replacement foot! I wouldn't waste a lot of time trying to glue it, if you will be provided with a replacement, though you might want to try a two-part epoxy if you still want to give it a shot. Not a big fan of Gorilla glue myself - the stuff makes a mess if you ask me! (and won't be invisible either!).

 That would've been logical. unsure.gif

I'll call 800 Apple today.  They may have it.  If not, I'll try the other suggestions, until I find the replacement.

Jennie,

If Apple doesn't replace the stand, try 2 ton epoxy glue.  Use as thin a layer as possible, the thinner the stronger the joint will be.

Good Heavens!

We can, on a moment's notice, even have a Glue Seminar, hereabouts?

My favorite, usually found only at hobby shops, but so good it's worth a search: Plastic Surgery.

It is strong, strong, strong and fast. Watch your fingertips, however, unless you like them permanently attached to one another! ohmy.gif

I may have dead monitor like that I can get the part from. I will check to see if it is still around.  If I have one I will send it for the cost of shipping if I can get it off.
Thanks
Guy

I am O V E R J O Y E D to announce! that I have the base.  I now also have an extra monitor, bought it so as to have the base.  So if anyone would like a really sharp, 17in Apple Studio Display, flat screen CRT, (weighing in at a whopping 45 lbs.!) please email @techsurvivors.net

Thank you Guy for the generous offer.  Glad you joined us! welcome.gif

Glad to be here!  I enjoy this stuff a lot and am a pack rat that hates to throw anything away that may be useful.  The problem is that I have too much of it!
Thanks
