New Mac/Old Scanners

Have Minolta QuikScan 35 Plus (SCSI) (35mm film)
Also Agfa SnapScan 1236 (SCSI)  (flatbed)

New Emac does NOT have SCSI ports.

Tried Belkin Adapters USB/SCSI model F5UO15, but it does NOT work.

Tried Belkin Adapters Firewire/SCSI model F5U541, it also does NOT work.

Other than having to buy new scanners, any ideas or suggestions.

I know of no SCSI scanners that will work with a USB-to-SCSI adapter. Other SCSI devices work acceptably well, but I still have to use my old computer if I want to use my HP SCSI scanner.

The price of progress, I suppose.

I was never able to get any Belkin products to work for my old Nikon Coolscan3 nor my Umax Astra 1220S, but I was able to use the USBXchange by Adaptec.
Still, I have to use these scanner in Classic, or boot into 9.2.2.

I installed a SCSI card in order to use my Epson XL SCSI scanner. No drivers for OSX, though. Have to use 9.2 for graphics. And a mini 50 to cent 50 cable over 3 ft is hard to find. Found a 6 footer on ebay and linked that to a 3 footer through an external HD.

Could you take an old Mac on MacOS 8.x or 9.x.x that you have lying around the house, connect it to your spiffy modern "legacy-free" MacOS X.x.x Mac via a crossover ethernet cable (or a swich or router), and use file sharing to access the older SCSI devices, printer, floppy, etc. via the old Mac ?

If so, I guess an old beige G3 might be the best old Mac for this purpose - I think it is the latest and greatest of the SCSI Macs.

I dunno if this would work - using a networked older Mac as a "legacy device server" - but it just might.

People here would know.


Pretty much free if you have an old Mac lying about.

If you do not have an old SCSI Mac - they are going pretty cheap, now.

Well, I got an Adaptec USBXchange. Installed same. BUT......

the Agfa Scanner requires a terminator when used alone, when I used it prior to USB, a terminator was only required at the end of SCSI chain.

So the terminator I have is a 50 pin unit and the scanner requires a 25 pin unit.

Spent several hours looking for this unit, went to Fry's, CompUSA and a local store. None of them had it. Finally found it at Northwest Computer Accesories in Oregon. Ordered it, should have it by the wekend!
