Trying to convert to OS10.2
« on: November 02, 2003, 10:49:25 PM »
I have been trying to move to my new dual G4 with OSX from 0S9 on my old G4/400. I've got both Macs using the same monitor.  It's been one hurdle after another. It sucks how long it's taking me... weeks!

I tried to set up my printer in Print Centre. I'm using an old Laserwriter Select 360 (Appletalk)  that still works great. It's got an adapter and an ethernet cable currently.

I went to Printer List window, and clicked ADD. It tells me "unable to Turn Appletalk on".
Here's what someone else told me to do:
I went to Network Prefs and:
 clicked "Built-in Ethernet" tab,
then Network Port Config,
Then clicked BOTH Ethernet Port & Modem,
and in the Appletalk tab, clicked "Appletalk Active".
Should be good, right?

Then when I go to Printer List and ADD,  I am where I was before!
The error message says "unable to turn Appletalk on"
and the printer still doesn't show up again!!\
Disconcerting to say the lease.

I have a few more questions on OSX set up, but one item at a time!

Raven:

I answer only to commiserate. verysad.gif   I'm having the same problem in Jag, with a LW Pro 630 and a G4/500 Cube.

I've ordered a crossover cable, to replace the stock ethernet cable, to see if that will solve the problem.

I just found this
QUOTE
Problem:
I'm trying to add appletalk printers and mount network volumes in 10.2. Nothing shows up in the connect... dialog box, and the print center, when chosing appletalk, responds with "Unable to turn on Appletalk."
Appletalk is checked on in Network Preferences.
I've run disk repair and repaired permissions.

Solution:
Try deleting this file and rebooting:
/etc/appletalk.nvram.en0
at OSX-Archive

I'll let you know if it works.

Do not fear your enemies.  The worse they can do is kill you.  Do not fear friends.  At worst, they may betray you.
Fear those who do not care; they neither kill nor betray, but betrayal and murder exist because of their silent consent.

well....I couldn't find /etc/appletalk.nvram.en0  huh.gif

So I booted into Open Firmware  (Command-Option O-F) and typed
reset-nvram   and then
reset-all

I still don't see the printer, but I'm not getting the "unable to turn Appletalk on"

But, I don't know what I'm doing, and as of right now, everything is backed up, so if I break something, it's just a day of wipe and reinstall....so YMMV.

Hate to be a spoilsport, but. . . . . .

I'm staying in OS 9.2.2 precisely so I can continue to use my AppleTalk laser printer (HP LaserJet 4M). There seems to be no way to make it work in OS X. Had to get an ethernet-to-AppleTalk bridge, and it works fine.

My USB color inkjet printer (HP PhotoSmart 7350) is totally compatible with OS X and OS 9.

Have a happy!

Right now I  am tieing up a lot of money with two working computers and two scanners. The old one with OS9 and the new one with OSX. Plus two scanners and inkjet printers. There is no point in working with the new G4/OSX, if I can't print anything on my laser. And I don't need to buy another printer!

I  thought I was doing something wrong with some settings. Now I am REALLY counting on you folks to find a solution!! I had asked about 3 people BEFORE I purchased my new G4 and switched to OSX and was told "no problemo" with my laserprinter!

My new dual G4 also came with OS9.  Why shouldn't it work that way? Somebody has to have a solution. Please!!!

Listen up everyone...
I did this and it WORKED! Too good!
From another forum...

you can only have appletalk active on one port at a time.
turn it off on the modem port.
also, drag your ethernet above the modem in the ports window to make it access first.

Now, I have to work on another few challenges. On to the next post!
